One bad thing about this conversation is that we leave Riley, Kalynn, and Whitney out. They are all right there to breakthrough. They all have special physical ability and could have an "aha" moment during practice one day. I hope Riley makes a push for a starting job after a spring season that must have ended in some disappointment for her, with Jazz taking the starting job back and the leg injury.
I was impressed with Whitney's athleticism in the High School All-Star Game. She seemed to hit the ball long a lot. It might be that she was to pumped up.
Looking forward to seeing Kalynn's progress. Even if she doesn't get the start this season, we need her to be ready by next season to continue the tradition of the dominant Middle for Nebraska.

So it begs the question: Will Sun play on the right or left? It all depends upon what the Mad Scientists (coaching staff) come up with. They have got to be so eager to get in to that gym.

Whitney has done that since I started watching her a couple of years ago. I think that she is still a victim of the trend in training youth to play golf, tennis, baseball, racquetball, etc. to swing as hard as you can. Develop power and you can work on timing, control, and touch later.

Lol @ anybody thinking Caffey won't be starting. Not me. I also think that the Baylor match tells you that Callie will be starting. When she is on the court, the defense is much more stable. There are many more touch blocks that are turned into in-system attacks, and then she makes a play like her first block on Pressley.

🏐 Somehow you seem to have forgotten about Kalyan Meyer in the middle. I see her playing a lot. Callie Schwarzenbach was good enough to play in the national championship match as a freshman. Her sophomore season wasn’t as good-mostly because she had a broke bone in her hitting hand-but she never came out of the line up. She’s a great blocker, she’s 6’5 and she has Hildebrand to help her attacking. I see her playing a major role in the middle. I see Caffey struggling to find playing time in the middle. Spot duty to infuse offense, but that’s all. Krause will start. I hope they are careful with Orr-the propensity of female athletes to have a second ACL problem on the other knee is quite high, but I am sure they know this better than I do. Rodriquez will be the L. Batenhorst and Zunh will fill in to limited roles. I look for Lauenstein and Gray to redshirt. Strivins said this week on her podcast that she had back problems during most of the spring season and rarely practiced, had surgery after the season, and has not jumped since her surgery (she has rehabbed in the pool). I don’t see a scenario where she will physically be ready to play this fall. Hopefully she will be ready to find a professional team next spring. we’ll see how it goes… I agree with all of this except the one concerning Caffey, who did a great job at M2 in the spring. Blocking and hitting the slide are her only liabilities, but she still gets lots of touches. I just don’t believe we can beat the best teams with an undersized middle. Meyer is going to be an AA middle, I see it beginning this fall. We’ll see how it goes. . .

Cook literally addressed this already on the record. If he has to choose between blocking and offense, he wants the middle that can score and that opponents have to actually contend with.

Briana Holman won a natty as an undersized middle. At the end of the year she was blocking to her vertical, not her height. She scored against everybody! I really want to see even more of an emphasis on the middle attacks and Kayla Kaboom.

Lol @ anybody thinking Caffey won't be starting. Yea l would be shocked if Caffey isn’t starting. Need one or the middles to be an offensive threat.

I remember that . At the time, I thought that it was more about sending a message to Callie that she had to swing harder and develop her attack. He has also talked about how important blocking is to winning big matches.

I really want to see even more of an emphasis on the middle attacks and Kayla Kaboom. And that got us a place in the regional final. . . Somehow I see Cook wanting more. Caffey’s role will be limited. Holman was a great player and also came to Nebraska as a AA from LSU. Caffey was a good player at Mizzo, and she’s a good player here. Meyer will give us more in the middle. We’ll see how it goes🏐
