So are they the Lady Tommies? Or just the Tommies? Tommies would be kind of a weird name for a women's team. Not the worst by any stretch, but a little odd.

I would argue Lady Tommies is weirder That's a fair point. It is kind of like Lady Barons instead of Baronesses, or Lady Lions instead of Lionesses. Thom is a fairly difficult name to feminize though. Or if there is an obvious female version, I am not able to come up with it at the moment. Of course I didn't notice Stephen/Stephani until it was spelled out for me, so there's that.

Would love to hear the back story on how St. Thomas got the NCAA to change it's reclassification procedure overnight for them. I'm assuming the NCAA just didn't care. St. Thomas challenged the normal procedure and the NCAA shrugged, "whatever."

Would love to hear the back story on how St. Thomas got the NCAA to change it's reclassification procedure overnight for them. I actually read the back story a few weeks ago. I can't remember where but I will try to find it. It is actually a fascinating story. It started when the Commissioner for the Summit League was in the Twin Cities for the NCAA basketball tournament and he swung by St. Thomas campus before he left town. This commissioner is well respected at the NCAA and was on committees that covered institutions moving from DII to DI. It was a very heavy haul to get approval for St. Thomas and it almost didn't come together. I will post the link if I can find it. By the way, both the volleyball and softball coaches are extremely high quality and it won't be much effort for them at all to make the jump.

Is St. Thomas eligible for the postseason in any sports? I know that you can 'fast-track' in some sports/instances but not sure about that in a move from D3 TO D1.

Won't be eligible until the fall of 2025. So the players they have recruited for 21-22 are volunteering to never play in the NCAA tournament, short of maybe 1 red-shirt season chance at the end. You would think that has limited the pool considerably. True a scholarship might trump that, but still a big ask.

So maybe it's worth it from an academic POV?

The volleyball juggernaut at Concordia (St. Paul) is going to directly feel the impact of St. Thomas moving from DIII to DI.

I haven't lived in MN since I left for college in the early 1990s, but from when I lived there and would visit thereafter, it always seemed like St. Thomas enjoys a really solid reputation in MN and that will attract local recruits who might have gone out of state to play D1. It covers a lot of bases - it's in the city and in a nice part. It's got a nice campus. It has "status" at least in the Twin Cities and Minnesota generally - a St. Thomas degree is good thing. It's not that big, but not tiny.
Doesn't 50% of the adult population in MN now have a St. Thomas MBA? Lol. That's not a shot at the St. Thomas MBA just a comment on how STU really used their graduate business program to spur growth. I forgot they started a law school.

It will be really interesting to see how it establishes itself.
I don't see much of a threat to MN, but eventually there might be a good local player who "wants to stay in the city but go to a smaller school" and wants to be a big impact player who might choose STU when she could have gone to MN. But, that seems far off at this point. But maybe not as far as I think?
