I'm wondering about Mac May.
2019 was a breakout year, with passing having improved greatly vs. 2018 (in my opinion b/c of having played Beach in the Spring) and hitting becoming both more prolific (4.84 kps), and efficient (2.87).
2020 was solid but a slight step down in offense (4.33 kps and 2.52 eff.), and behind Ndiaye in eff. who was at 2.98.
2021 seems to be another step back, being ytd at 3.95 kps and 2.12 eff. And again behind another hitter in Efficiency, with Luper at .306, who is also at 3.35 kps.
After 2019 I had some hope that May would continue on her upward trajectory, and have a good chance of a career in VB overseas and possibly even the USA WNT. The last time UCLA had a hitter who could dominate was a few years ago with Karsta Lowe, and we saw how she made Team USA.
Thoughts on May? Could it be setting? Could it be that without Keller as a human relations buffer, her confidence is down under UCLA's current head coach?

Lots of up and downs in matches. Sometimes she just doesn't seem determined or fired up, but maybe that is just her.

Could it be that without Keller as a human relations buffer, her confidence is down under UCLA's current head coach? Well (1) it's definitely the setting. Thompson was a great setter transfer and for all the years I've seen Chang on the court with May, they've always had a great connection. We all know what happened in 2020 with the setting. There's no way May could keep up that level of efficiency with the balls she was getting. Martin is a step up this year but far from Thompson/Chang or Sponcil. (2) Luper is getting more kills with a higher efficiency because she's quite talented but also a freshman. She's an unknown. Teams haven't been able to scout her yet. May has been on the court for 5 years now -- she still has an arsenal of shots, but teams have also seen her over and over. Her hitting numbers are bound to go down. As far as kills per set -- why does she have to have the most when UCLA has so many hitters to give the ball to? She just needs to play her role as an outside -- pass, hit, serve, block, play defense. She's done quite enough over the years to have Karch's attention and a number of international teams interest as well. Comparing May to Lowe is also a bit unfair. Karsta just had to get as many kills as possible because UCLA literally had no one else. She wasn't depended on to pass. She was in right back to attack, not be a stellar defender. Same with her serve -- okay, nothing phenomenal. And yes, she got onto the national team but she was always Murphy's back up because she lacked all those skills. May has to do a lot more which I think will benefit her in the long run.

So i guess i have to figure out a p12 app subscription in order to watch the UCLA vs Stanford game? Doesn’t look like anyone uploaded it. Can’t even find highlights on YouTube. It's not worth it unless you watch it on mute. They had major technical difficulties through the entire broadcast that really messed with the sound among other video glitches.

Wonder if any of these players have a chance to be in the starting line up next season?

http://instagram.com/p/CWmTaaGPir0 Chang isn't coming back?! 😭😭😭 I know we have a great setter coming in, but I was looking forward to Chang finally getting to spend an entire season running the offense. That injury came at the worst possible time.

Wonder if any of these players have a chance to be in the starting line up next season? Well with Chang leaving, my guess is Tufono will get to start unless we bring in a transfer setter. I don't know what the deal is with Pak. It seems like Lane's setting has gotten worse since the spring. When she's subbed in, she's been called on doubles repeatedly. In fact, in one game, McCall explicitly told her she'd take the 2nd ball and all Lane had to do was block.

Thought Fleck would stay another year if she wants a shot at Paris, she needs to go pro now tbh
