Penn State was just inconsistent this year. I wonder if they have any incoming recruits that will help out next year.

Any idea which seniors are going back for their covid year at Penn State? I feel like this team has the personal to be very successful but they were so up and down this year.

It’s the coach, his culture and inability to evolve with the times is the reason. Not the players.

It’s the coach, his culture and inability to evolve with the times is the reason. Not the players. I feel like losing Salima is what really hurt them. She was so important to the staff.

I feel like losing Salima is what really hurt them. She was so important to the staff. I think it's more than just Salima. I think the quality of assistants is down. The whole program is. I said this in another thread; I have a suspicion that part of this is because of football. I think the AD is funneling pretty much everything to football now (which, objectively, is probably the right call), and it's causing a downslide in some non-rev sports that used to be very good.

How would focus on football all of a sudden negatively impact volleyball? Football is the overwhelm focus there like it was when they were winning titles.

I don't disagree, but I thought it was understood in the JoePa era that football ruled, and it was some respects mere luck that at the time WVB and WBB and some of the other Olympic sports had success. So I am not sure the refocus necessarily has a material effect. But, they have gotten a lot of alums to step up and fund their pet programs, like wrestling and hockey. PSU needs a booster who might make volleyball a pet project? I do follow PSU athletics closely, despite my WI allegiance. It's my home state and I am very familiar with the FB program (I listen to David Jones podcast after each fb game)

I don’t their “decline” has anything to do with administrative or financial support. They don’t have the talent they did when they were winning titles. They’re being compared to a ridiculous standard that isn’t sustainable. Recruiting is the issue.

Head coach inability to relate to players is a huge part of it. Coach cook in recent interview talked about how his transition after his health scare changed him and the program for the better. He became relatable to his players, and wanted to be more involved with them as women not as means to an end. Not a iconic figure who sits in his office with the door closed. Fear and embarrassment are not todays coaching tactics.
