really diverse roster of teams represented. has the talent in D3 really become that spread out or were you trying to only put 1 or 2 players per top team?

really diverse roster of teams represented. has the talent in D3 really become that spread out or were you trying to only put 1 or 2 players per top team? A fair question, but I’ll clarify a few things. I was only one voter, our committee has 13 voters from across the country, 10 of whom are head coaches with more innate volleyball/landscape knowledge than my own. Each voter submitted a ballot of 20 athletes that were worthy of honors. The top 15 vote recipients were selected, with those appearing on at least half of ballots earning honorable mention. So my voice/ability to pick anyone was minimal (I had 1/13th of the power in the voting process, mathematically). This years honorees were simply the top 15 vote getters, which were fairly evenly distributed amongst many top programs. The talent in D3 has become widely dispersed over the last few years as the division has expanded from 50 to 100 plus teams. Likewise, the emergence of the Midwest teams was a long time coming, as volleyball at the boys grassroots level has always been strong in the Illinois/Wisconsin area even while the collegiate opportunity was lacking; for example, I graduated in 2012, and many midwest programs didn't exist until after. The top talent essentially have more academic options than they did before, which has been great for the sport and DIII as a whole. East Coast bias is a thing (I was guilty of it for the longest time), but the MidWest can play volleyball. I commend you, this is the best volleytalk question I've seen in a while.

Thanks for the lead photo of one of my favorite club players, #6 Kyle Cohan of Carthage, from my time as an AC for HPSTL. 👍
