WCC went 6-3 on Saturday after going 4-8 on Friday and 1-2 on Saturday, so they are 11-13 on the week with 2 matches still to be played today. Santa Clara takes on Auburn at 11:30am PT and Pepperdine finishes their tournament against Cal Poly at 5pm PT. The Santa Clara match was added after New Orleans had to cancel their match earlier in the week against Auburn due to COVID issues. Santa Clara d. Clemson, 3-1 Pacific d. CSUN, 3-1 BYU d. High Point, 3-0 Loyola Marymount d. Navy, 3-0 Loyola Marymount d. Liberty, 3-1 San Diego d. San Diego State, 3-1
Pacific l. Grand Canyon, 0-3 Saint Mary's l. Utah State, 1-3 San Francisco l. CSU Bakersfield, 1-3 You say Covid, but is there any chance Hurricane Ida had an impact?

So I didn't see it, but according to Zazu, Allen got swapped out for Reinert at some point during the match. Seems like Allen just had a bad match. Not just a bad match, Allen has had a disappointing start to the season. She's passing just a 1.93 so far this year with a 47% GP rate. Reinert and McComber haven't been much better at 47% and 44% but the worst passer has been Kenzie Koerber, with a grade of 1.88 and just a 35% GP rate. I did not have high expectations after watching the Blue/White scrimmage, but I was eager to see what happened in matches. The first match was dreadful, the second match a bit better, and they passed quite well against UNLV, but I don't think UNLV served that well. They passed poorly against Weber State and looked great against Michigan State until Michigan State started serving better, and then they struggled. Their backrow defense has been okay, but it's not as good as I'd expect from this group either. They haven't got chemistry right now. It's taking some time to learn to work together. I don't know if that will improve the passing or not. I'm choosing to remain hopeful, but I started with tempered expectations for this season and I have seen nothing yet to change my mind.

Oops, that's what it was. I'm so used to attributing it to COVID, that I remembered it incorrectly in my mind. Thanks for catching that.

Yeah, I'm not going to panic over losing to a top-five team on the road. Even against Pittsburgh, they still hit .265. We'll see how the rest of the year goes.

I don’t know what happened there. Wilson only had one attempt. The other night she struggled mightily, was like -.350 during the 2nd set, USD stuck with her and she ended up 14 kills at .146 (which exactly matched the team average). Hester got the call when Lukes went down and t did not go well. She was very effective tonight. Pries looks like the rising star right now. What do you think of San Diego's setting? Are you surprised Laura Madill hasn't seen more playing time? I don’t have the eye to make any qualitative judgements. Based on history, I’m surprised. Madill had the starting job last spring and USD was winning, there was a one game 6-2 overlap with Terçariol, the next game Madill was in for a single set (so it wasn’t a Covid issue) and then it was all Terçariol and USD went on a four game slide (albeit in the heart of the conference). I think Newsome and Gegenbacher grew immensely during their terms - thought this would be Madill as well, but it seems it’s Terçariol.

Pepperdine hit .244 (66/27/160). Led by Rachel Ahrens's 21 kills. But she only hit .150 (21/12/60). Meg Brown hit .500 (17/4/26), and Grace Chillingworth .316 (17/5/38) Zelaya had 53 of their 63 assists. She also hit .375 (3/0/8) and had 14 digs. They served 8 aces/4 errors, had 72 digs (21 by Madison Shields), and 10 blocks (4 for Ammerman, and 3 each from Ahrens, Brown, Chillingsworth, Ballo)

Madill might make the jump that Newsome and Gengenbacher did next year. I feel like Newsome and Gengenbacher all made a gigantic stride from their junior year to senior year, and I believe every single person on the San Diego roster will be returning next season.

#WCCSPORTS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – KYLIE PRIES, SO., OUTSIDE HITTER – SAN DIEGO Outside hitter Kylie Pries led No. 25 San Diego to a 2-0 record over the weekend with wins against No. 16 UCLA and San Diego State. The sophomore collected 31 kills in nine sets to average 3.44 kills per set, adding six aces and three blocks to finish with a team-best 38.5 points. The San Juan Capistrano, Calif. native was integral in USD’s 3-2 upset of the 16th-ranked Bruins on Thursday with a team-high 14 kills, adding two aces and two blocks to finish with 17 points. Pries followed that up with career highs in kills (17), aces (4), points (21.5) and digs (11) in a 3-1 victory over crosstown rival SDSU on Saturday, recording her first career double-double.
UCU #WCCSPORTS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – LEYLA BLACKWELL, SO., MB – SAN DIEGO Sophomore middle blocker Leyla Blackwell dominated at the net to help the No. 25 Toreros go 2-0 over the weekend, collecting 16 blocks in nine sets. The sophomore transfer averaged 1.78 blocks per set and helped USD combine for 32 team blocks in two matches. Blackwell was key in holding the No. 16 Bruins to a .163 hitting percentage, including three sets under .083. She collected seven blocks with two solo stops in the 3-2 upset victory. On Saturday, Blackwell collected a season-best nine blocks (2 solo) to help San Diego secure the 3-1 victory over the Aztecs.

Yeah, I'm not going to panic over losing to a top-five team on the road. Even against Pittsburgh, they still hit .265. We'll see how the rest of the year goes. There is no reason to panic. BYU will be what it has been (as it has over the last three years since 2018). They will also not be as good as they could be -- BYU has to change their approach to passing and defense. Can anyone say they have seen improvement in this area (remove Mary Lake and ask what defensive player has BYU truly developed--I cannot think of one). Not sure if people picked up on it this year, but BYU completely abandoned its commitment to GMS principles from a defensive player standpoint (the two transfers...IMO as players they are better than what was there previously BUT they are obviously not GMS trained/disciplined). This was obvious from the Blue/White scrimmage and was really interested to see the way it played out. Not saying the GMS commitment at BYU has been all good or is bad, just that it is what it has been and this year there was notable change--something I never thought that I would see at BYU or from an Olmstead coach. Something has to change if we are going to get of the mid to high level complacency that is all too common at BYU (where it is nearly impossible to be bad, but really difficult to be great). Oh well, done ranting. Wish I could get away to watch the BYU/Utah game in person. Should be a good one. Bet BYU serves M. Robison--she will either be unstoppable or a trainwreck--would be fun to watch either way.
