First conference matches start in less than an hour (6pm PT) with Pacific at BYU on a beautiful BYU TV broadcast, and LMU at Santa Clara on WCC Sports. Thanks for all the wonderful links, Zazu

Megan Rice is back for LMU. Their strategy in the first set was to send all of the balls to Geissberger and Rice. Santa Clara had a 7-1 lead, but LMU caught up late in the set and took it 25-22.
BYU trounced Pacific 25-13 in the first set and is up 7-4 in the second.

Santa Clara took set two 25-21 to tie the match at 1-1. Up 9-1 in the third set vs LMU.
Pacific fared even worse in set two vs BYU, scoring 12 points, but they are hanging in set 3 down 12-14. Koerber leads BYU in kills, followed by Elise Stowell, filling in for Livingston, and currently with 6 kills, hitting .500
San Diego is up 19-5 in the first set vs. Saint Mary's. 😳. Lukes is the kill leader.

25-7 San Diego in the first set over St. Mary’s. Wasn’t expecting that.

BYU had an easy -13, -12, -17 sweep of Pacific. Pacific hit -.038 for the match. Koerber led BYU with 9 kills at .353 but Stowell impressed with 8 kills at .538
Lukes led USD with 7 kills in the first set, so hopefully her ankle is healthier this week. Frohling had 6 kills, Saint Mary's hit 0 in the first set. Set two is more competitive with San Diego leading 14-12
Santa Clara gave up a big third set lead and LMU took the set 25-22 to lead the match 2-1. All of the sets have been close. Having Megan Rice back after several weeks is a game changer for LMU.

LMU ran away with the fourth set 25-15 over Santa Clara after 3 close sets, and took the match 3-1.
Megan Rice had a night! 23 kills at .395 (I suspect Santa Clara didn't look at any film on her, as she hasn't played for almost 3 weeks.). Geissberger had 19 kills at .222
Sangiacomo (16 kills at .314) and Shaffer (16 kills at .289) led SCU. Santa Clara had huge problems with LMU's serve in the fourth set, and must have had 10 second ball bumpsets that went over the net for easy LMU overpass kills.
-------
Set 3 is looking like set 1 for the San Diego - Saint Mary's match. USD is up 17-7 and closing in on an easy sweep. Lukes has 13 kills at .345 so far.

USD sweep of Saint Mary's with scores of -7, -21, -9.
Pepperdine sweep of San Francisco with scores of -13, -20 -13
BYU sweep of Pacific with scores of -13, -12, -17.
This suggests a real lack of parity between the top and bottom halves of the conference this year!
LMU vs Santa Clara was the closest match with a 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 win for LMU.

Glad to see Katie Lukes have a good match! Hoping that ankle is fully healed.

Lukes looks like she was moving much better last night, was able to play all 6 rotation and was very impressive. Top of the league looks really strong, hopefully the WCC can get 4 bids to the tourney.

I'm looking at the stats and trying to figure out which match(es) will be most interesting/competitive.
Pacific got out to an early 7-5 lead against #25 San Diego and Saint Mary's got out to a very early lead at #11 BYU so there is hope. Never mind. The stats were flipped. 🙄. BYU leads 5-3.

San Diego and Pacific are surprisingly tied at 19 in the first set. San Diego doesn't look very sharp. Missing lots of digs, and having some very inaccurate set locations and hitting errors. Pacific is doing just enough to stay in it. 21-20 San Diego.
LMU and San Francisco are at 14-13 in the first set, so USF is hanging in there so far....now tied at 16
BYU is having no trouble with Saint Mary's, up 18-12 in the first set....21-16
Gonzaga and Portland match just got started. Gonzaga up 4-3

San Diego is up 2-0 on Pacific 25-22, 25-19. Kumanova has 10 kills for Pacific. Pries has 7 kills for USD.
BYU is up 2-0 on Saint Mary's 25-18, 25-17.
LMU is up 2-0 on USF 25-23, 25-15.
Gonzaga is up 10-9 over Portland in the second set, but Portland has a 1-0 lead.
Pepperdine at Santa Clara should be starting now.

Saint Mary's played much better today than they did on Thursday against San Diego, probably due to having their libero back in the lineup. Nonetheless, #11 BYU had a pretty easy sweep of SMC. Koerber had 16 kills hitting .500
#25 San Diego had the sweep of Pacific with a 25-13 third set. Lukes had 12 kills, 1 error.
LMU swept San Francisco. Rice had 14 kills, hitting .280
Portland is up 2-0 over Gonzaga with a 25-17 second set, and have a slight lead in set 3.
Santa Clara took the first set over #23 Pepperdine 25-21. Pepperdine had huge serve receive problems and sent over a lot of free balls as well as making unforced hitting errors. I expect them to clean up their game in set 2. (Zelaya had only 5 assists in the first set, which is very telling. Ahrens hit negative with 1 kill.)
