USD sweep of Saint Mary's with scores of -7, -21, -9. Pepperdine sweep of San Francisco with scores of -13, -20 -13 BYU sweep of Pacific with scores of -13, -12, -17. This suggests a real lack of parity between the top and bottom halves of the conference this year! LMU vs Santa Clara was the closest match with a 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 win for LMU. There really is a big divide...not sure why exactly, maybe a trickle down effect with what the Pac 12 is dealing with too...but it has not served the conference well in the post season IMO.

Santa Clara up 1-0 on Pepperdine, and up 18-16 in the second set. TO Pepperdine. Santa Clara now up 21-20, trying to hang onto their lead and take a 2-0 match lead.
Portland completed the sweep of Gonzaga -20. -17, -19.

Santa Clara took a tight second set over Pepperdine 27-25 to lead the match 2-0.
But Pepperdine is starting to look better in set 3, with Ahrens taking a lot of swings and getting kills. Pepperdine leads 7-4.

I finally watched the BYU/St. Mary's match. St. Mary's was serving BYU short a lot, which I don't think is an effective strategy. The Cougars have too many weapons to let them be in system all the time, and they hit .404 in this match. The St. Mary's offense looked pretty good when they were in system, but they were out of system a lot. Another interesting thing on BYU's part was a middle attack involving Koerber that they ran a couple times. She explained after the match that they have the middle run a slide to draw the defense, and then she comes in and just spikes the ball. An example can be seen below.

I didn’t feel well over the weekend, bayarea, so I haven’t been on the last few days. I thought you’d probably do it, but just checked in to make sure. Domo arigatou!

Hope you are feeling better now, Zazu . All four matches starting in one hour. (For some crazy reason, I was thinking they were 6pm matches.)

My early predictions: LMU 3-0 over Gonzaga
Santa Clara should go 4 or 5 at Saint Mary's, with SMC likely pulling out the win.
San Francisco hosting Pacific? Maybe USF gets a set or two from Pacific on their home court?
Pepperdine 3-0 over Portland.

How does Santa Clara beat South Carolina, take Pepperdine to the last point and then get housed by St. Mary's? I don't know. They don't look good tonight, and it's going to get worse... facing SMC tonight, then BYU Thursday and San Diego Saturday. FWIW, Santa Clara now up 9-6 in the third set.
