What a great comeback by the Toreros, setting was very bad the 1st 2 sets, but got better lately.
Again, Frohling (24 kills) and Lukes (21 Kills) continue to carry the load.

Wow! What a thriller. Lukes definitely turned it around after the set 2 loss, both her and Frohling ended up with 20+ kills and over 0.300 hitting %. I thought Tercariol did well after she was subbed back into the game after being pulled out in set 2, going on a nice serving run in the 3rd set. Elly Schraeder also provided a nice boost off the bench after being subbed in for Goddard, and USD managed to slow down Meg Rice who seemed virtually unstoppable early in the game (hit % of 0.250 and 21 kills for Rice)

The 2-person offense survives again. But, like I mentioned, it's their blocking that really helps mask that weakness.
They outblocked the LA schools with a +21(!) block differential on the weekend. Including the last 2 points of the 5th set.

Or I suppose Mr. Magoo is possible.

This LMU announcer is struggling lol Oh my gosh..its so painful listening to her...i have it on mute... What?! I loved her. It helped lighten the mood when my team was down 0-2. We’re going to make LMU Annonucer bingo cards for the next match.

LOL she was so bad but it was pretty funny, you need to include “devastating” and “powerful” somewhere on those bingo cards haha

Also… Unfortunately Force to be reckoned with Not to be outdone AND everybody says “uh” once in a while but hers are just so delicious because I know she’s about to follow it up with a clunker like, “LMU up 10-7. If they maintain this lead, they’ll win the set.” Honestly my favorite WCC announcer. Oh, and “not to be out done” that video production crew was pretty special as well.

If I did the math correctly, BYU increased its NCAA-leading hitting percentage to .339 (942-234-2091) .338 (891-222-1979) after the wins over LMU and Pepperdine. Also, a bit unrelated, but Kentucky's mark of .360 in the spring is crazy good. No wonder they won the title.
Edit: I didn't realize that the NCAA site had been updated to include the LMU match but not the Pepperdine one. I should have just gone to BYU's website.

It really is a fascinating stat considering BYU's obvious weakness. It is a testament to BYU's hitters and the ability of the setter to not just better the ball but still run an effective offense. I will say this, IMO it illustrates the importance of having bad ball back up--specifically Koerber on the floor (even when she is struggling passing as she did against Pepp.) Koerber's value as an outlet is really hard to quantify. With Gneiting as effective as she has been on the slide I love that Bower has the option of going back row to Koerber when she can't get the ball to Gneiting--coming from the men's game, I can tell you that this misdirection for a defense is very effective and more common in the men's game. I think you have to give credit to Ballard-Nixon and Livingston as well. They have been very solid and pretty consistent and have not been high error. Both are high contact OHs which makes a huge difference IMO. Can't wait to see how it plays out with USDs big block. Should be a fun match to watch. If BYU played Pepp, LMU and USD I would be much more engaged--my favorite four weeks of the conference season.

San Diego’s Frohling & Blackwell Sweep WCC Weekly Volleyball Awards |
| SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for October 18, 2021. #WCCSPORTS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – GRACE FROHLING, JR., OPPOSITE HITTER – SAN DIEGO Junior opposite hitter Grace Frohling was key in both of No. 22 San Diego women's volleyball's wins this week, setting career highs in kills in successive matches as the Toreros took down No. 24 Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on the road. On Thursday at the Waves Frohling one-upped the career-best 19 kills she posted in August versus UTSA with 21, then on Saturday the junior opposite/setter proved to be the difference in the Toreros' furious 3-2 comeback win at LMU, posting 24 kills for a new career high as she added five blocks and five digs. For the season, Frohling has 241 kills, a mark that leads the Toreros and ranks fourth in the conference. It is the first WCC weekly offensive honor for Frohling and the third overall for the Toreros this season.
Also Nominated: Grace Chillingworth, Pepperdine; Chandler Cowell, Saint Mary’s; Heather Gneiting, BYU; Chelsey Harmon, Portland; Sophia Tulino, Santa Clara #WCCSPORTS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – LEYLA BLACKWELL, SO., MB – SAN DIEGO Sophomore middle blocker Leyla Blackwell continued her defensive dominance for No. 22 San Diego women's volleyball this week, helping propel her team to another two conference victories by totaling 14 block assists and five solo blocks across a pair of away matches at No. 24 Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. On Thursday at the Waves the San Diego, California native had eight block assists and two solo blocks in the Toreros' hard-fought 3-2 win, and on Saturday at the Lions the middle blocker posted six block assists and three solo blocks as USD rallied for a 3-2 comeback win at the Gersten Pavilion. For the season Blackwell has racked up 103 total blocks (21 solo), a mark that leads the Toreros and the conference by a 25-point margin. It is the third WCC weekly defensive honor for Blackwell and the Toreros this season. Blackwell taken honors in back-to-back weeks for USD.

4 matches on for tonight.
LMU should take Portland pretty easily...possibly dropping a set, since they can get a bit wobbly at times. Pacific at Santa Clara should be the closest match of the evening. Pepperdine should roll at Gonzaga...Santa Clara swept up there last week. Saint Mary's should also have no trouble with San Francisco, but I would sure like to see the Dons finally get a win.

Every time I think about San Francisco's current situation after they showed so much promise in the spring, I get a little depressed.

Saint Mary's should also have no trouble with San Francisco, but I would sure like to see the Dons finally get a win. Mostly agree with your assessment. After watching both Portland and Gonzaga vs. BYU, I finally understood why Portland swept Gonzaga. Gonzaga seems like they have the talent to be competitive, but it didn't translate to the court. Portland seems more tenacious mentally. Gonzaga seems to have the higher upside, but they get frazzled more easily and too often look like a collection of players rather than a team working together.
I also think LMU could drop a set at Portland. I'll go with a 3-1 LMU victory as well.
I thought Pacific's match at Saint Mary's would be closer than it was last week, but they were swept, with just one deuce set. Still, I think Pacific is better than Santa Clara and will win this one 3-2.
Pepperdine really should sweep Gonzaga. I just don't see Gonzaga having the consistency to keep up with them. I could see them squeaking out a set, but again I too think Pepp wins 3-0.
Saint Mary's at San Francisco... Of course I should say a sweep, but I really want San Francisco to win a set, so I'm going to say Saint Mary's 3-1.
Them's my predictions and I guess I'm sticking to 'em.
bayarea, don't I still owe you a popsicle or something from besting me in match predictions a while back? Oh wait, it must have gotten lost in the mail.
