The question mark is still the Pacific - Santa Clara match, currently tied at 1-1 with Santa Clara up 9-5 in the third. It could come down to SCU limiting their service errors - currently with 10 midway through set 3. Didn't start watching until about 15 minutes ago. Still a long ways to go, but come on, Pacific, don't let me down.

Pepperdine wins the third set 25-16 to sweep Gonzaga, as expected (-19, -17, -16). Chillingworth and Ahrens both finished with 12 kills. Pepperdine hit .299 and Gonzaga hit .147
Santa Clara crushed Pacific 25-14 in the third set to go up 2-1 in the match.
LMU leads Portland 10-9 in a tight 4th set.
Saint Mary's took set one 25-17 over San Francisco.

Didn't start watching until about 15 minutes ago. Still a long ways to go, but come on, Pacific, don't let me down. Zazu ....we've gotta talk. I think part of the reason I'm cheering for Pacific in this particular match is because I've been watching and waiting for Santa Clara to do more for three years. They seem to have the athletes, and just when I think they've turned the corner, they go the opposite direction. They've ruined my expectations, and now I'm a bit sour towards them. But I'm still open to having my mind reawakened...

Well, Santa Clara is up 22-12 in the fourth, so this one is going to Santa Clara...and will be their 4th straight WCC win.

LMU wins 3-1 over Portland. Sets were 17-25, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-17. I only watched set 4 but Portland could not handle LMU's serve...they got out-aced 13-5 on the game and 5-0 in the 4th set. Lots of feeble roll shots and tips from Portland which turned into easy passes and easy points for LMU. Jayde Harris was the only member of Portland's team with more than 9 kills, hitting .516 with 21 kills on the night. On LMU's side, Geissberger, Rice, Booth and Moore all had 10+ kills and all hit over .300.

LMU won 3-1 at Portland with a 25-17 fourth set. LMU hit .387, Portland hit .277
Geissberger finished with 22 kills on 30 swings at .633, so yeah, maybe they don't want to sit her out next match until they are firmly in command.

Santa Clara wins 3-1 with a 25-18 fourth set over Pacific. SCU hit .310 to Pacific's .144. Sangiacomo led with 17 kills at .357. (When SCU periodically subs her out, it's like subbing out Geissberger...both invaluable 6'5 pins, who hit at angles that other players are not used to digging.). Also, SCU needs to clean up their serving. I think they had 13 service errors and only 2 or 3 aces.
Saint Mary's is up 2-0 with sets of 25-17, 25-23...so USF is hanging in there.

Better than they last time I watched them. I wonder how competitive they'll be in the second matches against LMU, BYU, San Diego, and Pepperdine?

Just the one match tonight, but it's kind of a biggie. Posting this here, but it has it's own match thread.

USD swept easily by BYU (25-17, 25-13, 25-13). With this kind of dominant performance, BYU could have another deep run in the tournament this year. Unfortunately I think it's unlikely that any other WCC team will have a deep tournament run with how things are looking right now. I worry a little bit that BYU has not had enough experience playing against ranked opponents this season...compared with Big 10 and Pac 12 teams who consistently play other top 25 teams, I hope BYU will be prepared to take on more challenging opponents when the time comes. They did well against Utah (3-0 win) but their only other highly ranked opponent was Pitt (3-1 loss), and both these matches were pre-season.

Ehh they will be fine. 2014 championship BYU team only played two ranked teams before WCC play as well. Yes experience can help, but personally I think when those teams beat each other up all season, it’s very tough mentally to stay confident. BYU has an advantage going into tournament play because they have both momentum and confidence. Sometimes that mindset alone can give them the edge. Not downplaying the value of a tough schedule because obviously there are a lot more benefits to that, but I do believe there is another side of things as well.

Not downplaying the value of a tough schedule because obviously there are a lot more benefits to that, but I do believe there is another side of things as well. 2014 is the precedent for this, and that team had to travel the whole tournament, whereas this one will hopefully host the first two rounds. That said, it's kind of difficult to predict how the team will perform once they're in the tournament, and you never know if they'll get a particularly bad matchup. But BYU is crushing its competition right now, which is about all you can ask for. The 2014 team was a historically great blocking team (like seriously, probably the best ever in the rally scoring era) that was relying on a freshman setter that wasn't even the starter most of the season. This team is more similar to the 2018 team in that it has a very efficient offense and also holds its opponents to a low percentage. The offense is more balanced, and there are more overall weapons (the 2018 team had a hole at opposite all season, even before Miller went down), but they lack a truly deadly pin hitter along the lines of RJP, Hamson or Gray.

Not sure I'll be able to watch any matches today, but here's my guesses:
LMU 3-1 over Gonzaga
Pacific 3-1 over San Francisco
Pepperdine 3-0 over Portland
Saint Mary's 3-2 over Santa Clara.
