LMU getting rolled by Zags in the first set. No Rice. Is this a strategy? Sit one of your big hitters, tank the first set and come storming back? Or is Rice out for sone reason?
Edit: Oh there’s Rice. Didn’t see her at the bottom of the stat sheet.

LMU lost the first set 17-25 to Gonzaga and trail 18-20 in set two. Good grief, Lions....trying to make trojansc look clairvoyant. Now Gonzaga is up 24-19 and about to go up 2-0 in the match....and they take it 25-20. (I was going to give LMU ONE wobbly set, but not two!) Pepperdine took set one 25-12 over Portland and have a slight 23-21 lead in the second...24-21. TO Portland Pepp takes set two 25-21 to go up 2-0 Pacific took set one over San Francisco 25-22 and are tied at 17 in the second set....USF now up 20-19...23-21. TO Pacific Santa Clara and SMC about to start.

LMU is down 3-5 in the third set at Gonzaga and needs to put in some serious work to avoid being swept. The Lions are hitting .219 but are allowing Gonzaga to hit .400 in the match...WHAT?

Pepperdine is steamrolling Portland in the third set, after a tight second set. Currently up 20-9 and should easily sweep. Pepp is hitting .375 for the match and Portland hitting .108. Now 21-12
LMU now showing signs of life at Gonzaga and have taken a 14-12 lead in the third set, down 0-2. Now 16-13
Pacific and USF are in another tight set at 9-9 in the third with Pacific up 2-0...USF now at 11-9
Saint Mary's is up 18-14 in the first set at Santa Clara....Shaffer has 7 kills no errors in this first set so far.

Pepperdine easy sweep at Portland -12, -21, -14
Pacific held on for the sweep at USF, though the sets were tight: 25-22, 26-24, 25-22
LMU took set three 25-20 to stay alive at Gonzaga, and currently up 8-5 in the fourth set, aiming for a 'REVERSE SWEEP'
Saint Mary's over Santa Clara 25-21 in the first, but Santa Clara is up 14-5 in the second set....16-5. TO SMC

I don't know what happened to LMU in their first two sets, but with the same personnel, they are rolling in set four up 19-11 at Gonzaga, and looking to push to a 5th set. Currently both teams hitting around .240... a huge turnaround from the first two sets. Rice leads with 16 kills at .273, Geissberger has 13 kills at .235 Croft leads the Zags with 12 kills at .231 and McKenzie has 10 kills at .444
LMU now up 21-11. I guess it was time to get serious.
Santa Clara steamrolled Saint Mary's in the second set 25-12, to tie the match at 1-1. Shaffer has 12 kills, 0 errors, hitting .545 in the first two sets.

Gonzaga has a 7-5 lead in the fifth set over LMU. I just started watching this set, but LMU hasn't been having crisp connections between setter and hitters...lots of mis-timed hits and tips, and unforced hitting errors. No idea what's going on, because obviously they played very well in the last two sets.
Meanwhile, Santa Clara is steamrolling again in the third set over Saint Mary's. Currently up 18-6, and SMC using their last timeout.
---------- Gonzaga up 8-5 now. LMU looks flat.
Santa Clara up 20-6

Gonzaga is up 11-7... 12-9 12-10. TO Gonzaga
Santa Clara took the third set 25-8. 😳. They lead 2-1 (21-25, 25-12, 25-8) over Saint Mary's. Hitting .402 to .104 and out blocking SMC 9-1.
Now Saint Mary's is out to a 5-1 start in the fourth set.
Gonzaga at match point 14-10.

And Gonzaga takes the fifth set 15-10 on an ace (a tangle of Lions couldn't get the second touch, which was fitting for the way they were playing the entire 5th set). trojansc called the history of bad matches for LMU at Gonzaga...I believe they now have a 1-6 record at Spokane since 2017, despite having a better overall record just about every season. Meanwhile, SMC and Santa Clara tied at 7 in the fourth.

LMU upset by Gonzaga! I checked into the LMU-Gonzaga match at the beginning of the 5th as well. Some sloppy play, miscommunication and hesitation on LMU side led to early mistakes...ie. block not completely pressed over the net & ball falling on their side, 2 players looking at each other wondering who's going to play the ball. Also, a challenge that did not go LMU's way...when it looked like Rice had tooled the block nicely, refs ruled that the block didn't touch it. Gonzaga did open the door for LMU with 2 service errors at critical times in the 5th set (LMU closed the gap to 12-10). But, as bayarea mentioned, the set ended fittingly with a poor service reception from Rice, who just couldn't get out of the way of her own bad pass in time for Shroll to play the 2nd ball.

Saint Mary's leads 18-11 in the fourth set at Santa Clara after getting demolished in sets 2 and 3. Looks like this one will go 5.
And Saint Mary's takes the fourth set 25-16. Headed to 5.

Saint Mary's recovered from two disastrous sets in the middle of the match and are headed to a five set win at Santa Clara ( Zazu called it!) SMC currently up 12-7 in the fifth. SMC has match point at 14-7...14-8 SMC takes it 15-8 on a Tulino hitting error. Santa Clara hit .290 and SMC hit .185, but SMC played much better defense in the three sets that they won. Shaffer had 20 kills hitting .432, 12 digs, 5 blocks for Santa Clara. Sangiacomo 16 kills at .200. Georgiadis 25 digs. Cowell led SMC with 13 kills at .159, Erland 10 kills at .269

Pacific ended up sweeping San Francisco. I hate to put a first-year coach on the hot seat, but they are now 0-18 with only eight sets won all season. They were 8-10 during the spring and were legitimately the fourth or fifth best team in the conference. This should not be acceptable.
