Gonzaga can't recover after losing the lead. Pacific wins the 3rd, 25-23, and sweeps the Zags. Seems like this is the theme of the night lol

Ignore. See post below. No wonder those numbers seemed awfully low. They were wrong.

Chandler Cowell was strong for SMC tonight, 16 kills (.317%) + 8 digs + 1 block + 1 assist + 1 ace/3 service errors for Cowell tonight. Plus, out of the final 8 points SMC scored in the 4th set, Cowell kills accounted for half of them. She had good support from Laird (.500%) and Reed (.389%) as well, each with 10 kills. SMC did a good job of shutting down Swett and Bradley across the net who both hit negative on a combined 35 total attack efforts.

**edit: original post was corrected. keeping this post up to showcase the actual numbers. These #s are off...are you checking smcgaels.com/sports/womens-volleyball/stats/2021/portland/boxscore/10123 ? These seem like numbers from earlier on in the match, before it ended. All the #s I see are bigger. Here's the revision: SMC hit % should be .215 to Portland's .177. SMC with 158 total attacks, Portland with 130. SMC with 24 hitting errors, Portland with 17. SMC with 58 kills, Portland with 40. Cowell came out with 16 kills (.317%), Baka with 11 (0.000%), Laird (.500%) and Reed (.389%) with 10. Portland's Harris had 16 kills hitting .317 as well (exact same as Cowell across the net). Lawson with 7 kills hitting .353. Portland had 8 aces, 9 service errors. SMC had 9 aces, 16 service errors. Portland with 14 blocks, SMC with 6. Portland with 65 digs, SMC with 61.

I was using the individual numbers from the live starts, which were not updated correctly. I don't know why I bother. They're hardly ever correct. They seemed strangely low, but when you are doing two things at once, it doesn't seem quite as strange for some reason.

Santa Clara actually up 21-19 in the third set at SD 22-19, and then USD rattles off two straight points. TO SCU. USD rattles off two more points to take the lead at 23-22. Another TO for SCU After watching most of the B1G teams with their stellar back row play, I'm always disappointed that the WCC teams are nowhere near that level of backcourt defense. And none of them seem to set a priority on recruiting an excellent libero, or two, so the back row is sometimes like Swiss cheese. Well, I would point out that BYU is No. 2 in the country in opponent hitting percentage at .112. And unlike with some BYU teams, it isn't really being done by the block so much, as they're 67th in the country in that category at 2.38 b/s.

They're very well rounded and their DS have done well so far (Bower helps a ton also), BUT at this time they don't have much competition in the WCC (USD ranked 20th, Pepperdine 25th, everyone else unranked). Again, they did well against Utah but we saw what happened to them against highly ranked Pitt. We'll see how their back row performs in the tourney when they're compared against teams with stellar back rows...like Nebraska and Wisconsin, and are also tested against teams like Texas and Louisville with lethal offences...guess we'll see if it turns into Swiss cheese or not when they're challenged. Hope they'll be ready!

Certainly, their schedule wasn't as tough as I would have liked. BYU is ranked No. 2 in Pablo right now, so they must be doing something right. I guess we'll see.

They're doing all they can at the moment...winning their conference and dominating WCC (and some NCAA-wide) stats. Can't go back in time and change the outcome of that Pitt game, which has been their only loss this year. Unfortunately, when a team only has one test against a highly ranked team and they lose it's hard to justify bumping them up the rankings or betting on them to win against top 5 teams who have more impressive wins under their belt. I really don't think there's much more BYU can do to move up the rankings until they get more ranked wins. As you said, it comes down to the easier pre-season schedule.

I really love Aylen Ayub. I'm so disappointed USF doesn't have offensive options. Yeah, I've been a fan of Ayub since the spring. I imagine there are a number of P5 schools that could use her. As for San Francisco, they might be the most disappointing team in the country for me personally. I think they were my second-favorite WCC team during the spring. They weren't as good as BYU, Pepperdine or San Diego, but they were more competitive than I ever would have expected based on their history in the previous several years. I legitimately ranked San Francisco as the fourth-best team in the WCC in the spring, ahead of LMU, who they beat twice in consecutive five-setters.

She is the best pure setter I've seen in several years. I kept thinking during last night's match that if San Diego had her on their team, that match against BYU would have been much different. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed watching a setter so much.
