I do not agree with this week’s WCC Players of the week. Offensive: Rachel Ahrens. Defensive: Kenzie Koerber What in the world? I can see a case for Ahrens being made, but Koerber for defensive, no, I don’t think so. Some of the nominations (or lack therof) are puzzling to me. I don’t think I like the way this is done. Frohling was a much better choice for defensive player, but was only nominated for offensive. Yet I think her two matches were more impressive than Ahrens offensively. I also don’t understand why Eschenberg wasn’t even nominated. Yeah, I don't agree with either. Ahrens was better than anyone else on her team against BYU, but that isn't saying much. As for DPOW, I thought it was a tossup between Grace Frohling and Jadyn Tubbs. Koerber had 10 blocks and 13 digs. Maybe she was getting credit for that massive service run? It feels like the decision-making went something like this: BYU won both matches, so we have to reward someone on their team, so we’ll go with Koerber for defensive. And then Pepperdine upset San Diego, so we’ve got to give that to Ahrens, even though Grace Frohling was better over the two matches.

If they wanted to give an award to someone from BYU, they could just go OPOW for Eschenberg or Bower. Ahrens makes zero sense to me. I mean, she hit .140 against BYU. As I said in the awards thread, I disqualified all Pepperdine players from consideration this week due to their performance in Provo.

Never mind that Grace Frohling had two superb performances during the week, and Ahrens was just so-so in her first match. Those 27 kills are everything, aren't they? And since we can't overlook such an amazing one-match performance, we are stuck giving a defensive player of the week award to a BYU player no matter who she is because it doesn't make sense that no one one BYU gets an award after the week they had. I dislike weeks like this in the WCC. If they only did a player of the week, Frohling would have had it hands down, but somehow she isn't good enough for either one. That's not right in my book.

A friendly reminder that at the end of the day, these awards are quite meaningless in the grand scheme of things

I mean, they'll be overlooking someone almost no matter what. I would have been okay with Frohling winning either award. Just my opinion, but I need my players of the week to play really well in both matches (unless their team only plays one), not just one of them. That's why I didn't consider Ahrens. The only way I would break that rule is if there was literally no one who played really well in both of their matches. I haven't run into that issue yet.

A friendly reminder that at the end of the day, these awards are quite meaningless in the grand scheme of things And usually I really don't much care either. But for some reason today this really bugged me. Maybe it's because my back has been bothering me and so I'm easily upset by stupid things.

Pepperdine no surprise is absolutely crushing San Francisco in set one, 22-7
Santa Clara up 18-16 over Loyola Marymount in the 1st.
BYU up 15-11 on Pacific in the 1st. But Pacific is challenging touch call. Doesn't look like it was touched, so may be reversed.
San Diego up 19-17 on Saint Mary's in the 1st.

Pepperdine coasted home to a 25-7 1st-set win over San Francisco. Pepp leads 1-0 Up 15-8 in the 2nd.
Missed the end up the Santa Clara @ Loyola Marymount match. Stats show Santa Clara up 1-0, but the first set score stopped at 22-22. LMU up 10-7 in the 2nd.
Saint Mary's trailed but came back to win the first set against San Diego, 25-20.
BYU held off Pacific 25-20 to win the first set.

Wow, 22 match losing streak for USF. HC Silva is gonna need to let some players go and get some solid transfers or internationals if he wants to turn the program around sooner than later.

Oh boy, LMU loses the second set in overtime, 26-28, after battling neck and neck with Santa Clara the whole way. That seems to be the theme for this season. Down 0-2 at home to Santa Clara.
