Gonzaga won the first set on Senior Day, 25-17. Cara McKenzie
Pepperdine didn't have any trouble against Santa Clara in the first set, taking it 25-16
In a bit of a surprise, Pacific wins set one over San Diego, 25-21

Pacific takes set two as well, this time 25-22. San Diego in a hole down 0-2. Can they make another comeback?

Pepperdine finishes their sweep of Santa Clara with a 25-20 third set.
San Diego with a big turn-a-round in set three, 21-13, currently over Pacific.
BYU just won set one at Saint Mary's, 25-17. Up 1-0

San Diego took set three 25-18, and looked much better, but they started slowly again in set four, and they never could overtake the Tigers, who won it, 25-20, and the match 3-1. Pacific exceeds expectations once again. BYU won set two over Saint Mary's comfortably, 25-15, but were outplayed in the third set by the Gaels to lose, 25-19. BYU up early in set four, 5-1. And they have no trouble securing the 3-1 win with a 25-14 4th set.
Forgot about the LMU match, but I'm not even surprised to see that San Francisco won the first set 25-21. LMU makes no sense at this point. However, they have stormed back to take sets two and three easily, (-16, -13), and they are leading 18-14 in the fourth. They should break their 7-match losing streak.
And they do end their losing streak, albeit to winless San Franisco, but who cares? 25-16 in the fourth for a 3-1 win. San Francisco is better than their winless record suggests. I'm waiting to see what happens with the new coach next year. I'm still optimistic that he will end up doing a good job there.

Coaches poll for this week is out. BYU remains ranked #4, no surprise there. Pepperdine gets the seed at #25 (no change from last week) and San Diego drops out of the top 25 (ranked #23 last week). If BYU beats San Diego (as I expect them to), and Pepperdine beats Gonzaga (as I expect them to), San Diego and Pepperdine will have the same in-conference record (14-4). Pepperdine will have a stronger overall record (22-5 to USD's 21-7) - although in my opinion San Diego scheduled a tougher pre-conference schedule...dropping to #1 Texas and #19 Utah but winning against #16 UCLA. Pepperdine's only game against a ranked opponent in the preseason was against Washington and they lost 3-1. HOWEVER, both San Diego and Pepperdine faced LBSU in the preseason and Pepperdine tied them 2-2 (it was an exhibition match where the coaches chose to play 4 sets in advance) whereas San Diego lost 3-1. Also, San Diego swept Pacific and beat Pepperdine the first time these teams played but were defeated by both in the second half of the season (indicating Pepperdine getting stronger, San Diego running out of steam?).
Interested in your thoughts on who deserves the top 25 placement and who will make/not make the tournament.

Closest set win for Pepperdine over Gonzaga this year, 25-23. Ammerman leads the waves with 5 kills hitting .833. Thiros only hitting .111 so far for Gonzaga.

Really impressed with how well Gonzaga is passing right now. Set 2 all squared up at 22s. McKenzie, Croft, Russell and Marshall have all heated up for the Zags despite some sloppy setting.
Time out Pepperdine.
Gonzaga gives 2 easy points to Pepperdine, one hitting error and one trap set (to Thiros) blocked by Pepperdine. It's not Thiros's night so far. 24-22 Pepperdine.
Time out Gonzaga.
Hit hard by Gonzaga. Difficult pass, but crafty play by Ammerman to get it over the net and it can't be returned by Gonzaga. 25-22 Pepperdine.
For Pepperdine: Impressed with Meg Brown this game, 7 kills hitting .600. Ammerman continues to be effective with 8 kills hitting .467. Shields has 9 digs (tied with Ivanova on the other side of the net)

Pepperdine has realized that 90% of the time Gonzaga gets a perfect pass, they go to the middle. Their block is more well placed, Russell and McKenzie's hitting % is on the decline.
Pepperdine's service reception hasn't been good this game, but they are finding ways to make plays work out of system - credit to Zelaya. Ahrens (17 kills, .382%) and Ammerman (12 kills, .500%) have been excellent out of system as well tonight. Brown remains hot (8 kills, .636%)
21-11 Pepperdine. This one's all but over.

Gonzaga is fighting for their life...24-21. Unfortunately it's a little late. Time out Pepperdine. Thiros came down hard after jumping to block and ended up limping off the court - tough way to end the season, hope it's nothing serious. Overpass kill by Ammerman, this one's over. 3-0 Pepperdine!
