Wow, 10.54 is insanely fast. FloJo's "world record" (wind-aided) might actually be in play for the first time.

Also, Sha'Carri was DFL in that race at 11.14. I know she missed a month, but she could still train, right? She should never finish in last place.
Edit: Thompson-Herah offered a hilarious "no comment" when she was asked about the person who finished last in the race.

Mike Powell's long jump record is 30 years old today. There was an outstanding article about it in the OC Register.

Cole Hocker has gone pro. I thought NIL may have encouraged him to stay, but I guess not. This hurts Oregon's cross country hopes.

I also think, particularly for distance runners for whom there is a fall season, competing in 3 separate NCAA Championships hurts the chances of qualifying/peaking for World Championships in Eugene next June, and that is going to be the best non-Olympic commercial opportunity for U.S. runners in decades.

Wait ... I thought this was over. People only do this for one week every four years, right?

Yeah, I agree. He could definitely make more as a pro. I just thought it might have persuaded him to stay, especially since he didn't turn pro immediately after the Olympics (or the trials). You make an excellent point about the World Championships in Eugene next summer.

A local company announced an NIL deal today that will offer up to $6000 to all BYU female student athletes. At first, I was thinking about this more in volleyball terms, but I think women's track and field/cross country may benefit the most from this. $6000 is effectively a full-tuition scholarship, and one of the challenges for track programs is that they only have 18 scholarships to spread around the different event groups, and there are lot of partial scholarships. BYU is one of the schools that focuses primarily on the distance events, but I imagine this NIL opportunity will help with recruiting in other event groups. And even among the distance athletes, it should help because it's not like all of them are on scholarship. They have way more than 18 athletes on the team.

Conference cross country meets are being held today. My two alma maters are No. 1 and No. 3 in the latest poll. They also have three titles since 2015.

The WCC women and MWC women are both running right now. The cameras at both meets are bad, though the MWC one is legitimately terrible.

So the top four contenders at nationals are probably the top four teams in the poll: New Mexico, NC State, BYU and Colorado. All four dominated their meets. New Mexico won the prestigious Nuttycombe meet earlier, defeating NC State and BYU, though Whittni Orton didn't run, and I think NC State also held some people out. BYU's fifth runner in that race finished in the mid-60s, and Orton could very well be the individual champion in Tallahassee. BYU has everyone back from their national title team, and Orton seems to be healthier than she was. I also don't expect Lexy Halladay to blow up in the last kilometer again.

Really impressive run from Weini Kelati. I've always thought that her running style might lend itself better to the roads (particularly the marathon) than the track at the professional level. It will be interesting to see what she decides to focus on when the Olympic Trials for Paris come around.

Cross country regionals are today. Since there's no subjective committee in cross country (a formula determines who the at-large bids are, and the top two finishers at each of the nine regionals automatically qualify), we will know we has qualified for nationals by the end of the day.
