This roster shows Speraw does not care about medaling or prepping for Paris , this is one last hurrah for he and his old pals Smith and GM.

no T. Averill. Sh!ts rigged. hopefully he gets his shot in a couple years. I'm surprised no one is talking about Gasman/Mitchen/Huhnmann for the next quad..............................6'10 guys hopefully most of those make it.... If I had to put money on it, I'd say Mitchem and Gasman will be the Stahl/Averill in the next Olympics. Gotta really assume some changes to the team will happen 3 yrs from now. At this point, I'm assuming we'll lose Holt, Smith, Anderson, Muagatutia, K.Shoji. Also seems like E.Shoji might have 1 more Olympics after this one, if Russell continues to be an injury magnet, he might medically retire. We might only have Micah and Taylor as the lone leftovers in terms of starters. That said, that leaves the future of our OPPs up in the air and who would be the 2nd OH. I honestly think our middles will be fine, with Averill/Stahl and Gasman/Mitchem, our middles will be fine. I honestly don't think Ensing is the long term answer at OPP, admittedly he's bulked up and better, just not sure if his upside is that great. Maybe if we could lure Gabbie Garcia Fernandez here, we could have a long term solution. That said, is TJ DeFalco the answer for OH2? Or is there someone else? Maybe the Sander bros starting in 2024?

I think they can manage in the middle and outside in the next quad but questions at opposite could likely define the US squads success at the major competitions.

I would still go for Patch than Ensing.

Some thoughts.
Our guys clearly were not in the right mind set nor healthy enough to sustain the VNL for a variety of reasons. It has been messy at times. We don't need to nitpick.
Some on this roster still need to put the egos aside, aspirations of Wheaties Boxes dreams and buy in to the collective consciousness of what it will take to medal in Tokyo.
I think Speraw/Sander(Captain) CAN get the final roster, alternates included, to shed any baggage they still are holding onto, rehab and strength train and become laser focused over the next month and few weeks in Anaheim.
The roster is solid and a few will have to play above themselves, but USA athletes often find ways to do that.
Now If....if...A. Russell is cleared for tempered training soon and IF it looks like he is trending upward by Monday July 5th, the trigger has to be pulled.
With the complete starting lineup of of Christenson, E.Shoji, Sander, Russell, Anderson, Holt and Smith as starters and the compliment of the 5 other guys the collective synergy and symmetry instantly results in the odds changing in Pool B.

I think Ensing provides better blocking. For a guy who jumps out of the gym Patch really struggles as a blocker. Hopefully he figures it out for the next quad

Who were people expecting to be on the roster instead of GM?
I also share the sentiment that others have expressed, it does not matter who our backup opposite is. They will only get playing time in a runaway match or if there is an injury. If there is an injury, then our medal chances are basically gone.
You see this in pro club volleyball too. Teams do not sign a backup opposite with the intention of having to play them. I asked someone in Europe as to why Jake Hanes as not getting court time in France. The person, who works in the trade, stated that backup opposites only see minimal time. I think much of the structure is set up around finances. It is difficult to pay enough for another top-notch opposite that might not play too often. Berlin has had this luxury because they do have enough money to bring in players that are of quality enough to do well with the caliber of the German Bundesliga. Hence you saw Kyle Russell and Ben Patch share time to see who was the most productive. It started that way with Patch and Ensing as well. They also signed a capable Moraes to back up Patch and used him when he got hurt. But we see in Italy that Shaw, Page (back in like 2015), and Vernon-Evans that when the starter gets hurt or leaves the club will bring in someone else or move someone to the right side in order to not play the backup.

And maybe they get lucky and strike gold with a tall player that develops in the practice gym and they can get a deal the next year on a player that is still low stock to other teams. That is my guess. NOt a terrible option for the player, they get good reps, reduced pressure in their first year overseas with time to figure it all out.

The US roster is as good as any in the world through the first 4 players, but the drop off after that is steep...

Huhman kind of went MIA this year. He got on at Roeselare, but was on the bench most of the time. We saw this year he wasn't even in the gym. I think he comes back with Jendryk, Averill, Stahl, Mitchem, Gasman next year. I haven't heard anything about where Mitchem is going next year, but I did speak to a few agents after his junior year who were interested in signing him once he was done at Lewis. Gasman is playing at a strong club with high expectations, and though they lost Bruno, Raphael is a legend at setter. If Gasman is pulling his weight, he will get fed the ball.

One other player that their VNL play sealed their fate was Tuaniga. The team really struggled while he was setting (at least the times I saw him play). He just wasn't making good decisions or connecting well with his hitters. Which really surprised me, I think he is such a great/crafty setter coming out of college. I really thought he had a chance to knocked Shoji out of his "runner up" role.

I was under the impression Tuaniga had next to no chance at unseating Shoji. While I think he was the third-best setter in the program, I felt there was quite a bit of distance between he and Shoji.
