It is going to be a long tournament for Samoilovs/Smedins, assuming they keep winning. They have a claim on being the best team in the tournament, but they are not going to be able to rely on their countrymen to get any wins, so they are almost certainly going to have to win two matches each round to advance. 8 wins over 4 days is a tall order. Zero margin for error.

BVTEP is back in action! Glad to see Ermacora is good to go. They won a tight three setter in the first round match. It's strange not seeing Doppler/Horst competing for Austria! Seidl/Waller were their top team in the Olympic rankings (5120 points) and BVTEP was second (4580). Doppler/Horst were right behind them at 4380 points. I wonder what the team makeup would be if Ermacora couldn't have played... acrossthepond do you know how the Austrian Federation would decide which team gets the bid if they do earn it?

I agree, they control their own destiny and should be able to beat any opponent but if the layoffs get shorter in the later rounds they could be exhausted for those golden matches.

Ehlers/Fluggen lost to a Lithuanian team and now they have to play the same team again to keep Germany’s hopes alive.

SamSmed with a 28-26 set one comeback win over Belarus. Much easier win in set two 21-15. Belarus had a lot of problems in serve receive leading to some easy points for Latvia.

Germany wins 17-15 after being down 14-12. Ehlers with a block to save match point and another for the win after a long rally where Fluggers dug everything.

Not exactly sure how they do the brackets, but the best men’s quarterfinal matchup tomorrow should be the Swiss vs. Austria.
Latvia, Germany, and the Dutch seem to have easier matchups, providing their top teams all beat weaker opponents.

Their coach told me it would be up to the Federation's president to decide. Not sure if that includes potentially having some sort of qualifier match between those teams or if it would be a straight decision between one of the other (or even Doppler/Horst, who knows?)

From my point of view Doppler/Horst are out. I don't know how the federation would decide. BVTEP have the better top results, but also Seidl/Waller got a 5th in Ostrava and have more overall Olympic ranking points. I would like to see a matchup between the 2 teams - somethin like a best of 3 series to decide who is going. But I haven't heard any whispers yet how it will be decided.

Zero margin for error. That's what I thought, winning 8 games in a row is tough, they even have the Dutch teams in the same bracket. Varenhorst/VdV are about the same strength I would say, but they have much better support and will be able to save energy. *edit* just saw that VDV dropped out, so Latvia's chances increased

Interesting nugget by the way: The format for the countries is always 1# vs #2 and the other way around. If each nation won one match there will be a deciding match. So far so good. Heidrich/Gerson have lost lots of entry points after Ostrava and are now ranked worse than Krattiger/Breer. I think everybody agrees that Heidrich/Gerson are still the #1 team in Switzerland, but because of the lower entry points they play as the #2 team in this Continental Cup finals. Hence they always play the #1 team of the other nations first which somehow breaks the #1 vs. #2 logic.
