Their coach told me it would be up to the Federation's president to decide. Not sure if that includes potentially having some sort of qualifier match between those teams or if it would be a straight decision between one of the other (or even Doppler/Horst, who knows?) From my point of view Doppler/Horst are out. I don't know how the federation would decide. BVTEP have the better top results, but also Seidl/Waller got a 5th in Ostrava and have more overall Olympic ranking points. I would like to see a matchup between the 2 teams - somethin like a best of 3 series to decide who is going. But I haven't heard any whispers yet how it will be decided. From a performance standpoint, I agree 100%.....they're big in Austria though, so I wouldn't be surprised if that happened...I guess it's irrelevant now though

Schedule for tonight: Dutch women vs Norway at 5 and 6 pm local time. Dutch men vs Latvia at 7:30 and 8:30 pm. But SamSmed play the 8:30 match against Varenhorst/Penninga. So even if they win they’d have to play right again against the other more rested Dutch team I’d think, especially if the Dutch women win in two as expected. Seems very unfair to Latvia. Would they at least get an hour break? Even that seems like a tall order for a team in their mid 30s.

Looks like the semis and finals streams are only available via a subscription package through EuroVolleyTV. They do put up a free highlights video afterward on YouTube.

Bit of an upset in the women's semis as Norway's Lunde/Olimstad beat Schoon/Stam in straight sets. I'd never seen this Norwegian team before, but they're an undersized split-blocking team with a lot of athleticism. I see they only got out of the qualifiers once in three Cancun events. In the first match van Iersel/Ypma beat Helland-Hansen/Hjortland 17-15 in the third set. It'll be interesting to see which teams are put into the golden match.
And FYI, I was able to sign up to watch these matches at eurovolley.tv without having to pay a fee.

On the men's side, Germany gets swept by Switzerland and is out of contention. Samoilovs/Smedins are trying to keep their hopes alive. They are currently up in a must-win third set against Varenhorst/Penninga to force a Golden Match for a chance to make the finals.

Dutch win 17-15. Pretty steady rain during the match. Varenhorst with some tough jump serves down the stretch to get Latvia out of system. Sad to see Samoilovs/Smedins won't be going to Tokyo.

Wonder if this is the end of the road for SamSmed.
Go Switzerland!

Norway vs. Netherlands women's golden match coming up. Looks like Lunde/Olimstad vs. Schoon/Stam in a rematch from earlier today.

Schoon (defender) really struggled in spots, but she had some huge digs down the stretch. Stam (blocker) kept them in the match with aggressive net play and serving. This Norway team is really scrappy and fun to watch but probably don't have the power or size to succeed together at a much higher level.

That is going to be a good final between the Dutch and Russia! I would love to see Stam/Schoon in the Olympics, but I would also be happy if Van Iersel got the bid, too. She was in a good position to qualify before Stubbe disappeared, and she's had to battle it out in qualifiers since. Stam/Schoon definitely seem like the better team at the moment, and they have a bigger up-side, but it's hard not to root for Marleen!

Was just looking at their record and they've beaten Slaes, Agatha/Duda, Taliqua/Mariafe this year, plus taken MHPavan to close three set matches twice. Stam seems to have the most upside of the pair. Aggressive blocker, good hand setter, a pretty effective topspin jumper, and is quite athletic for a big girl. Schoon has excellent court vision and needs to be a little more consistent in transition. Plus, they're only 22 and 19. I've become a fan of theirs this year and would love to see them in Tokyo too. Hopefully they'll stick together for the next quad as well.

Always liked Marleen as well, and she definitely got a raw deal with the Stubbe situation. Was actually wondering if they ever considered pairing her with Stam.
