Just for fun.......... Can we talk about Argentina? Could they have the power to upset either Turkey or Russia? They could, if the cards fall the right way. Mayer is very good. She impressed me in the IOQT. Herrera has spent the whole spring training in Argentina. Nizetich had a very good club season in France (with Raskie) Biggest question marks will be passing (obv) and if they can get enough offense from their opposite (Fresco)

I’d say it’s pretty unlikely, but I mean they COULD, but it will take a bad performance by Russia or Turkey for Argentina to win tbh. But of course, we’ve all seen how Turkey can play, both the good and bad.

Yea... but she played more than anyone else too. Teams in Tokyo will know you serve Arina or whoever is opposite Voronkova... until that doesnt work anyways lol

I was bored and thinking of which teams have the best OHs, in that they have two capable OHs that can score consistently, pass, defend, etc. It seems kind of like a rarity now that teams have two good OHs. So going into the Olympics, who do y’all think have the best OH tandem? The following is just what I think:
Tier One would have to be China, Brazil, and the USA. The US and Brazil have two OHs that can score AND pass well, whereas China has OHs that are good scorers (Ting is literally the best), but they both don’t need to pass because Gong receives. All three teams have another OH that could be easily starting.
I would say Serbia, DR, Italy and Japan would be in the next tier. Serbia has one that can score but can’t pass, and another one who can pass but is not productive. DR has big scorers, but their passing isn’t good. Sylla for Italy is good, but I haven’t really seen C. Bosetti play for the NT so I don’t know how she’ll hold up. Japan could be in the tier above, but their recent games have me thinking they should be in this tier. Ishikawa has looked like she’s been struggling to score against good teams.
Russia, Turkey, South Korea, are next. KYK is still a good player, but she certainly isn’t what she used to be. The second OH spot for Korea isn’t good. Turkey and Russia both have inconsistent play from their OHs. Turkey has straight up pulled both in the same matches during the VNL so we know they aren’t reliable, and Russia has two bad passers and one subpar (if we can classify Voronkova as even that) with ok scoring from them.
I want to include Argentina in the tier above, but other than Nizetich I don’t think their OHs will score well against opposition. Maybe Rodriguez will be fine for them, but I’m not sure. Then idk anything about Kenya, tbh I was expecting Cameroon to qualify lol.

Then idk anything about Kenya, tbh I was expecting Cameroon to qualify lol. Directly comparing is difficult. How can you fairly compare China to USA (or literally any other team) when their opposite is capable of taking 5 rounds of reception leaving the OHs with little more than half the reception workload of the others? That's why I prefer to bring the opposite into the discussion as well. Granted, even doing this is not completely fair, because the middles also have scoring capabilities.
For me I would put the top five teams in the top tier, but there's varying levels of possible underlying issues that may surface at the Olympics and break the team - China: Gong's attacking still hasn't been tested against really top teams, and it's unclear if it would hold up. If pos 2 just starts collapsing things will not look pretty.
- USA: Bartsch's OOS attacking, and Larson in terminating. And we don't know if the coach will make the right choices regarding who is starting and who can sub on since the players are all quite similar.
- Serbia: Mihajlovic's attacking. That's all really. If it works it works, if it doesn't work they're in deep trouble.
- Italy: If anyone can replace L. Bosetti (granted I haven't seen Sylla for a while so IDK). Also, Egonu's unstable temperament. - Brazil: Overall energy and fitness levels of the 30 going on 40 year olds. Also the OH1's reception, whether that is Fe Garay or Natalia. Gabi is not good enough to do 2 person reception like Serbia does.
Next up is the teams that have an obvious deficit:
- Russia: Parubets out, no OH2. Voronkova as OH2 won't cut it.
- DR: their reception is just way too messy in general.
Last are the teams that only have a few bright spots:
- Turkey: It's all Karakurt (if they find an acceptable pair of OHs they could go in the same tier as Russia and DR) - Japan: Only Sarina Koga is any good. Kurogo is too messy and Ishikawa is simply way too short at 171cm. If Nagaoka is in decent shape again they can go to tier 2 - Korea: missing the elder of the bully twins, Lee Jaeyeong. KYK is not the KYK of 2012. Again if she returns they can go into tier 2

Yeah, I chose to only do the OHs because it is a position that I think has been dropping in level since 2012, or even before then. It’s become rather rare to see two well-rounded, capable scorers at the OH position as of late. While I get that it’s hard to compare OHs against each other when their circumstances are so different (Gong passing for one, Koshleva not passing, etc) I feel that kind of contributes to the comparison. I have China in the top group of OHs because I’ve seen each OH hold their own on serve receive. But I can certainly see why you’d prefer to group all pin hitters together, especially when some teams with dominant opps can make the effectiveness of the OH better.
