I see us getting second or third with Brazil in our pool. Since it’s a random drawing for the crossover QFs, I’d imagine it’s an equal proposition between getting Italy (no thank you) and getting Iran or Japan, depending on who takes third.

Actually, as sad as it sounds and I hope this doesn’t happen, but Japan could be out if they don’t get a win or a match point against Poland or Iran. Canada’s likely going to reach 2 wins + they have the point from the Italy game. So an outright win would put Japan through, anything less would be decided by match points or set/point ratios (assuming Canada stays at 2 wins. If they somehow upset Poland, they’re likely through). So much math/possibilities, but theoretically Iran could lose both of their remaining matchups and be eliminated in the comparison to Canada.

^ basically, Iran vs Japan is shaping up to be a make or break for either team unless they somehow upset the top dogs (Italy for Iran, Poland for Japan).

I've been a bit underwhelmed by Pool B so far - I think that's in part due to Brazil's lackluster play.
Pool A has been fun to watch though!

But even if Iran upsets Italy, a head to head win for Japan in 3-0/3-1 would likely put them through especially if Canada stays at 2 wins. Basically Japan needs that win against Iran

Going with some "backs to the wall" winners in next round. It seems the external motivation is driving wins this tourney. France upsets ROC Japan upsets Poland Iran takes down Italy. After Brazil's listless performance I still will go with the USA, as I think we are playing better ball

I feel like if Japan and France get hot at the service line and their opponents go cold then their chances are better. Brazil is going to be a fun one!

It’s weird, Leal got pulled against Tunisia, got pulled against Argentina before going back in, and hit negative here. He’s not had a good Olympics at all, which is weird bc I didn’t even think he was capable of such a sub par performance

Jumping in here and off the current thread topic but I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Stahl against the better opponents. Hard to gauge against Tunisia but I really like his physicality and service pressure. Am I alone in thinking that? Like I said the middles pretty much had free run in the last match.

Should I be bothered that the USA dropped a set to the cupcake team? I'm trying to decide who I think will win tomorrow vs. BRA.
Also, I think France could probably beat Brazil and if that happens and they are held to just 5 match points and, assuming they lose to the USA, they will end up 5th in the pool. I expect Argentina to win vs. Tunisia and get the full 3 match points which would have them at 6 MP's!
That would be the shocker of the tournament if that were to go down. Woof.
GIVE ME CHAOS OR GIVE ME DEATH!......lol

If you all have the time, I highly recommend you listen to the FiveOne podcast's breakdown of everything that's happened so far at the Olympics. It's about an hour long, but includes recaps of the situation in each pool as well as individual comments about the teams. Seriously, Dan's always been great but this is some top notch analysis and incredible insight. He also explains the Pool A situation a lot more clearly than I did lol. Essentially if no more upsets occur, the winner of Japan-Iran will take 3rd and the loser will take 5th, but if upsets do occur then it gets really complicated. He also includes some statistical analysis as well, so definitely give it a shot! Here are some links (you can also visit the FiveOne IG page and there's a link on the story rn but that will go away): fiveonevb.podbean.com/podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fiveone-volleyball/id1451778351
