I think we have it in us to beat Argentina. I used multiple streams last night, and pretty much all of the commentators said this was Brazil's best performance of the tournament, and it was close af. I know we can win so hopefully the guys play at their best.

Here are the updated scenarios for Pool B. FRA/BRA is before USA/ARG. So, USA will know their fate prior to match time. How each team advances: -France: win 2 sets vs. Brazil OR any possible result *except* a 3-2 Argentina win over USA in that match. -USA: win over Argentina OR winning 2 sets IF France loses in 3 or 4. -Argentina: MUST win. Loss = eliminated. How are the group rankings determined? Heard them talking about point ratios in the France vs. ROC match earlier. Seems the USA is even with France in Wins, Set win Ratio but leads in points ratio?

“The Olympics is not very forgiving. We beat France convincingly in our opening match and in the blink of an eye we lose two and now our backs are against the wall,” USA coach John Speraw said.
“We need to do a better job executing the game plan and taking advantage of opportunities, which we had even in the fourth set,” Speraw said. “We lost the serve-and-pass battle. They had a lot of aces and we had a lot of errors, yet we were right there until the end.
“We simply need to play better.”

Both Russia and Brazil brought A games. Onward and upward

Some of my thoughts on the last round of matchups
Poland-Canada: Perrin is having a fantastic tournament so far, and Bann is electric as well. Poland doesn't look quite as dominant as you expect, but their physicality and service pressure can really wear down opponents.
Brazil-France: If I remember correctly, these teams split the matchups they had in VNL with Brazil sweeping France quite easily in the final round of VNL. I actually think that if France plays at the same level as the Russia game then they match up quite nicely with Brazil. I'm hoping for a dramatic match here.
Japan-Iran: Make or break matchup for both teams. As Japan's coach predicted, the Venezuela, Canada, and Iran matches are key to their chances. The last time these two teams played, neither team played their full starting lineups and it was the first match of VNL so not much to learn from it other than the fact that I'm pretty sure Japan was passing above 90% positive which is insanely good. Iran is serving & blocking well, Japan's offense looks quite good with some nice defense to back it up.
USA-Argentina: On paper, this should be a 3-0 or 3-1 win for USA but Argentina can make things interesting especially if their pins can play at a serviceable level. De Cecco is really good at running the middle and right side. I really hope service errors don't let Argentina get into the match but it's very possible that we see another high error rate match from USA.

Yeah, Perrin has been having the best summer of a Canadian OH since I’ve started following the team in 2012. He’s been terminal and low error. He’s only really had one “bad” game all year, but it wasn’t even bad just kinda average. So I hope he continues this play into the Poland match. Bann is definitely the most underrated libero at the Olympics. He makes nasty digs on balls where there’s no block. His passing can struggle when servers go after the Bann-Hoag seam, but that seems more on communication than actual passing technique. Finally, what makes me nervous for this match is Poland’s serving, and Leon’s in particular. In their VNL match up, Canada had leads after 20 in each of the first two sets before Leon carried his team to the finish line with his serving. So hopefully the Canadians will handle it better tmrw

Yup, Perrin is playing by far the best ball I’ve ever seen from him.

Canadians have clinched even if they get pummelled badly by Poland? 😯 Yep. The reasoning is that Canada can have no worse than a 9:9 set ratio (1.000) The Japan-Iran loser cannot pass Canada in points (who has 7) and Japan-Iran loser will also have a sub 1.000 set ratio. Mathematically impossible for Canada to be passed. Woohoo! And I appreciate the explanation. Cheering on USA to make the quarters too.

He was the exact player I wanted to become in terms of skill and his energy haha

Some interesting tournament stats entering the final set of matches (taken with a grain of salt):
As a team, Brazil is ranked 8th for attacking efficiency, Russia is ranked 9th, Iran is 10th (only above Tunisia and Venezuela). However, Iran is 2nd in scoring blocks and 4th in aces.
USA is the best digging team so far. Russia and Argentina are 9th and 11th, respectively.
Brazil and Japan are 10th and 11th in reception.
Patry is the most efficient opposite attacker so far, right ahead of Ghafour. Wallace and Leal are both < .30 efficient. Zaytsev is also pretty bad at .177.
