Ugh 😭. Brazil’s defense is just too good for Japan right now, they’re up 19-17.

Japan’s passing has been breaking down but I’d like to see Sekita go to Nishida or Ishikawa on all out of system swings, not to the OH2

Ishikawa deserves a better pro team than Milano. Especially if there's a setter that can really help him play fast.

Darn, Brazil’s block/D was just too much for Japan towards the middle and end of set 2. Japan needs to find something at the service line, and they can’t just rely on Ishikawa/Nishida for offense

If Japan can find another middle plus Takahashi can improve in offense and blocking, I think they could really start challenging the top teams more.

Ishikawa doing his best to prevent a Brazilian beat down in set 3, but still down 19-22

Sad but still so, so proud of this Japanese squad. Most people didn't think they'd make it out of pool play. Just an unlucky draw.
Ishikawa played like a real captain, always encouraging and always stepping up. Glad he's got such a great group on court to finally back him up.
Fine job, boys. Hoping you find all the little missing pieces before Paris! ❤🇯🇵

As expected, Brazil completes the sweep comfortably. Japan had their chances, but Brazil was too good defensively and too physical for Japan to stop.
I hope Japan continues to build on this experience and identify areas to get better at, as I view this Olympic Games as a success for them. I think the move to take 3 newcomers at the pins and omitting Yanagida/Fukuzawa was a bit risky but paid off in the end as Takahashi/Takanashi/Otsuka will definitely benefit from this experience with Paris right around the corner. Middle play needs to improve and I know having shorter pin blockers doesn't help. Overall, I'm satisfied but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done in order for Japan to compete with the top teams and not lose any ground in Asia.

Most people are claiming it's a waste to bring the younger ones but I can't see Yanagida/Fukuzawa changing the result anyway. It's better to invest experience in Takahashi and Otsuka (though he only played very briefly) especially since these two are only 19 and 20 years old and are still in college, not even exposed in club teams. The experience would help greatly in the next quad. The middles are surely lacking, and I hope they get to have stronger ones.

Bringing in too much young blood is like saying "we give up and we will use this olympic to give experience to our younger players so we will be prepared for the Paris olympic." Yanagida/Fukuzawa have more experience in the european kind of volleyball. They would have done way better than takahashi/takanashi.
