I really can't believe how all these schools are jumping on board with this very ill-advised policy. I predict it's going to become a nightmare for team culture and cohesion, player focus and commitment on playing and team priorities, and a guaranteed plethora of future administrative and legal issues. The ONLY parties that will benefit from this are a very few star athletes and agents and lawyers. In fact, this should be called the "Boundless Opportunity Retirement Act for Lawyers." It will only become a 'nightmare for team culture' if there was a weak culture to begin with. Programs that have a strong culture will not be negatively affected by this. I think you are naive to believe this. There is a reason Lexi Sun is the most marketable player in the country. And it isn’t because she’s the best player. Chasing Instagram followers and failing to get as many as your teammate (so less $$$ coming your way) will be a big mental health issue that coaches will have to deal with. Heck, the path Kylee McLaughlin has chosen probably helped her gain a following and increase her marketability. Think that’s good for team culture?

LSU has a gymnast with over a million Instagram followers. VB has some catching up to do! And she wasn’t one of the top 25 finishers. I’m not saying this isn’t more fair than the previous system. But when a lesser athlete becomes a millionaire for her looks (like Dunne), it IS going to create issues on the team.

A mental health issue? What? Having a great social media presence is going to be financially rewarded. You don’t think that will lead people to mental health issues? I think that was happening BEFORE money was involved.

I as well suspect that it will create a bunch of Anna Kornikovas, where a bench player rakes in all of the endorsement deals, simply because she looks like a Victoria Secret model.

I think that was happening BEFORE money was involved. I think this is a big stretch. There are potential jealousy issues on every team in this country. Someone gets more playing time, someone feels like the coaches like someone else, whatever. NIL is just another factor, and players are going to have to put their big-girl pants on and get over it. Most already do this. Some don't, and enter the portal. Surely you're not implying that players who leave programs due to personal conflicts have mental health issues?

Those other issues you mentioned don’t have anything to do with body image. Feeling like coach favors a different player isn’t going to lead to eating disorders in the way that “Susie makes more money because she’s skinnier” will.

1.1 million IG followers for an NCAA gymnast though is insane. That's slaughtering volleyball.
Lexi Sun only has about 75k, by comparison. Even Kayla Simmons only has about a half a mil.

If that's where you're going with this, it's still a miss. These girls already deal with body image issues. NIL isn't going to exacerbate that.

Did you see the size of the IG followings for Big Ten wrestlers? A quarter million for one of them. I knew the Big Ten was big into wrestling. I had no idea it was that big.

And for a sport that gets very little attention and has kids coming from all sorts of financial backgrounds, this is huge. Lots of positives and negatives to NIL, and of course the big stars will benefit more publicly. But I cannot help myself but thinking what an opportunity for a walk on or s-a from a low income family to change their own life. Post-grad degrees and less school debt, books, housing, etc. For now, I'll view the glass as half full!
