And for a sport that gets very little attention and has kids coming from all sorts of financial backgrounds, this is huge. Lots of positives and negatives to NIL, and of course the big stars will benefit more publicly. But I cannot help myself but thinking what an opportunity for a walk on or s-a from a low income family to change their own life. Post-grad degrees and less school debt, books, housing, etc. For now, I'll view the glass as half full! How is a walk-on going to generate revenue? The same way as any other athlete, though probably to a lesser degree. Selling merch, advertising for a hometown store, social media endorsements, YouTube videos...

By doing something sportsy that gains attention. Lol. Good luck with that. Hayley Densberger just finished her Husker career, made several sportsy plays, and would have made a couple bucks based on local fame. She was never on scholarship.

There will be a ton of walk-ons and benchwarmers making good money from NIL deals, especially on the social media side.

Only a matter of time before someone does it, right? I would not be surprised if at some point a lesser known athlete uses their position on a team to seed something that goes viral. There will also be businesses/boosters do things like the Nebraska fast food restaurant that is offering the first 100 student athletes at any college in Nebraska and in any sport a deal for promoting their loyalty card on social media.

They're under no obligation to disclose this stuff, right? Doubtful. Depending on the state and the school, athletes probably don't have to disclose income to their athletic department, either.

Does this alter how players approach social media?
Lexi Sun only has 75k IG followers, but she doesn't really post any provocative pictures.
She could maybe triple that following if she did.

there's probably less money in this very crowded influencer space than people think, but athletes that are smart about it can make some cash and get free stuff. I think this is most likely to be true. Some will make big bucks, but most will make part-time job money.

Forget IG, start checking out how many followers/views/likes these kids have on TikTok. They will be able to push merch and brands for anyone who sees them having a following, influencing just went to a whole new level.
Plus all the kids that just started hitting up Dave Portnoy's DM's asking to be a Barstool Athlete. He isn't sure what it means yet but whatever he touches turns to gold, so I would jumping all over his frenzy of accepting kids to the roster before it becomes something formal and detailed out.

Only a matter of time before someone does it, right? It is already happening, I know stories of a few girls that have resorted to this as college athletes, and from my understanding it has previously put their coaches in a seriously uncomfortable position about how to address it or if they were breaking any rules. I should edit to say these stories have come from scholarship cheerleaders and Gymnastics women.
