While I wasn't thrilled with their invite, I think UC San Diego will be competitive quicker than most think. They'll push to the middle of the conference in a couple of years if not sooner. It's a good time for UC San Diego to join the conference. A combination of transfers out and losing the 2020 season hurt the other Big West schools and makes it easier for UCSD to close the gap on the rest of the conference. Plus the extra year of eligibility due to Covid has changed recruiting and left some talented recruits looking for a home. A kid like Zaria Henderson might have gone to a Pac school in a normal year now ends up at UCSD.

I mentioned this elsewhere - going from 16 to 20 conference matches for this conference at this time is not going to be good for the RPI of teams trying to get an at-large bid.

Who is going to pass for LBSU besides Hoff? I would expect Diaz or Giambi would have the first crack at it.

The extra matches against the lower conference foes will be a RPI drag for sure. I have not looked at all the teams conference schedules but hopefully they were built with the best RPI possible. Hopefully the bottom 3 or so have matches they can win against opponents with similar abilities. My LBSU team has a relatively tough schedule considering their lack of a returning/starting setter. I sure hope they can win some of the tougher ones for both their and the conference’s RPI. Not sure how this team will be to start the season.

Now it’s like the PAC and B1G - 2 matches each week from 5-14 = 10 weeks x 2 matches = 20 matches. The first 4 weeks are still open for OOC play, no change.

Which they could of used to schedule better competition I think they still have 4 preseason weekend - the problem is they get 4 extra lower rpi in conference games which brings down their overall rpi.

It basically means they also loose Pre conference games right? Which they could of used to schedule better competition It means that the conference record for the Big West will be 110-110 instead of 72-72. The BW was 58-47 in nonconference matches in 2019 - which isn't great, but better than .500. On average - every conference opponent will have a slightly lower w/l% than if they were doing a 16 match conference schedule.

You might have left out Binder from CSU Bakersfield unless she is not going there.

Coaches that play tough OOC schedules and loses most matches just to prepare for conference play are hurting rather than helping the conference RPI. Schedule OOC matches against opponents that you have a good chance to beat,..."should be the rule of thumb"!

Excellent academics, beautiful campus, gorgeous San Diego weather, great facilities - UCSD has a lot going for it.

With all these new faces in the BWC teams. Who will be the POY? FOY? Coach of year? Team to beat?
