Section V Semi Finals on Saturday:
Class A:
1-Penfield v 5-Fairport 3-Webster v 2-Victor
First semi final without McQuaid in a looooong time.
Prediction: Victor over Fairport in the finals. Penfield is due for a loss and Fairport is coming off of a huge win. Victor rounding into form at just the right time on the other side of the bracket.
Class B: 1-Spencerport v 4-Irondequoit (Semifinal 2 TBD)
Prediction: Spencerport rolls through section V regardless of opponents.

Section XI DIVISION 1 Final is set: 1. Northport vs. 3. Smithtown West Northport defeated Lindenhurst Smithtown West defeated a really talented Connetquot team
Prediction: Smithtown West seems destined for a repeat county title. They always seem to figure it out in the biggest matches.
DIVISION 2 Final is the very predictable, very inevitable rematch of 1. ESM vs 2. Westhampton Westhampton rolled past Hauppauge To say ESM rolled East Hampton is a bit of an understatement. At one point, Jake Deslauriers rattled off 8 straight aces. Yikes.
Prediction: ESM has had one of the greatest seasons in Section XI boys volleyball history (they lost 1 set all year while playing the hardest schedule of any team regardless of division), but when these two teams face, you never know. That being said, ESM wins in 3 or maybe 4.

an undefeated season with only one dropped set from the first match? I graduated in 2009 and i cant think of any team from my era that was this dominant. maybe the Vincent Tuminelli hills squad in fall 06? i dont know the mid 10s teams very well.

Section XI Championships were held last night
Division 1 was a matchup of #1 Northport and #3 Smithtown West, in which West won 3-1. It was hard fought, but pretty convincing demonstration by West. They simply have more options and weapons, and not to mention, the best player on the court in Dan Shanley. They move on to face Massapequa in the Long Island Championship on Thursday.
Prediction: West will win fairly easily.
Division 2 was a rematch of last year's county final: ESM vs Westhampton Beach. It was about as crazy, hard fought, action packed, intense match as you could get for a match that finished as a 3-0 ESM win. Every set had some could go either way moments, but ESM continued to prove they will simply not be denied this year. It was not their best played or cleanest match, but they scrapped and clawed, and in the end made the plays when they needed to.
ESM has now won 46 straight sets and is 16-0 on the season. Pretty historic run to this point...
They will now face Roslyn for the Long Island Championship on Thursday.
Prediction: ESM

Long Island Championships were held this morning. Division 1: Smithtown West (section XI) vs Massepequa (section 8)... It was a really great back and forth match in which Massepequa won the first set, however, West showed their talent and toughness by winning the next three sets to wrap up the match 3-1. Dan Shanley was the best player on the court, but Adam Bender provided an excellent second option was making things happen all match. Smithtown West is headed to the State tournament next Saturday!
Division 2: ESM (section XI) vs. Roslyn (section 8). This one was very lopsided and not super compelling in terms of who would win. ESM was thoroughly dominant from beginning to end and wrapped it up in three quick sets. They continue to overwhelm every opponent they face with their multiplicity of weapons. Jake Deslauriers (OH) ought to be LI player of the Year. The other outside Mark Porcelli was really dominant throughout the sectional playoffs as well. Christian Herr is one of, if not the best setter on Long Island and also provides a huge swing and block on the right side, plus Hank Foglia, Ayden Deslauriers (who is 9th grader) and Danny Teidemann round out an incredibly balanced, crazy talented squad. They conclude their Long Island season 17-0, winning 49 straight sets (only losing 1 all season in the first match).
Good luck to West and ESM at States! Go get it!

Section V had sweeps in class A and Class B in the finals.
Spencerport swept Brockport in B. Spencerport plays West Seneca West in the regional final. Penfield swept Victor in A. Penfield plays Orchard Park in the regional final.
**Side note the "neutral site" for regional finals is Orchard Park High. Tough draw for Penfield to play at their opponent. OP gets a huge advantage. OP probably gets to advance here unless Penfield is willing to eat up all of the Boos like Hulk Hogan turning heel.**

What are your predictions? Let's go! 3 teams in each divison? That's it? How many teams play in NY? Makes for a pretty hollow "State" tourney experience.

What are your predictions? Let's go! 3 teams in each divison? That's it? How many teams play in NY? I don’t know how many teams play total in NY but the sport has been active here at the high school level since the 1960s and possibly before. In the Buffalo region there are 37 teams. Then there is the Rochester region with roughly 30. Syracuse, Albany area, Long Island regions also have teams. There are more teams than you would think. Buffalo has two champions….one in Division 1 and one in Division 2. After sectionals those winners play the winners of the Rochester area to be the far west regional representative for states. So after the regional tournaments are done there are 3 teams left in each division. We have been trying to push for a rep from each section as there is an inequity in the talent level between WNY (sections 5 and 6) and pretty much the rest of the state. That would make a 2 day 6 team tournament that I think is more representative of the talent level. Just my opinion. Looks like Spencerport and ESM will be an excellent matchup though.
