I’d like Goncharova to absolutely go off and make everyone feel dumb for saying she’s old and not top 10 anymore. Let’s make it happen

Well. Italy only got one win back in 2016. So they have already tied their previous Olympics record.

Italy finishes off the sweep 25-14 and looked stronger with each progressive set. Reminds me of how Serbia demolished Russia in Rio. If I remember correctly, Serbia crushed Russia 25-9 in the first set, although the later sets were quite a bit closer. So in that light, this match is arguably even more lopsided, since Russia progressively lost more points per set as the match went along.

Gonch kinda looked like she wanted to smack one of her teammates and go home.

I’m still not 100% sold on Italy. Nor would I ever write an Egonu team off even if there were reasons for concern prior to this.
Let’s see if their OH’s can sustain this level.

Whatever happened to the Russian glory days of Gamova? They ended on August 7th, 2012 I feel like the Russians have the right tools to be better, but they never could get there.

Whatever happened to the Russian glory days of Gamova? That is history. The days when Russia won back-to-back World Championships in 2006 and 2010, when they won silver back in Athens, are long gone. Come to think, Russia has never really been the same since Karpol retired. Gamova, Sokolova, Artamonova, etc, those were the glory days. Now...only nostalgia.

Their developmental programs are failing them. They aren't producing very many top players any more. They could try to play faster but the results would be worse. It doesn't help that their best OH right now blew up her ACL.

Back in the days of Gamova, they can just hammer down the ball, because the opposing team just had zero ability to receive her spikes. They are like a Russian tank, their strategies aren't complicated, they just crush everything in their path with their sheer firepower. But now, since there are no players on the level of Gamova for Russia, they can't replicate that previous success with the same strategy.
