Random observations:
To watch the live stream, and see 3 different commercials over and over again, or to wait, watch NBC for better commentary, get even longer commercial breaks, and risk that they might go off to a feature on some Olympic surfer for 15 minutes. #Choices. They do seem to be rebroadcasting VB matches the following evening on NBCSports, if you can access that channel.
Yes, the stream guy for the USA-ARG match was dreadful. Someone needs to tell him to just call her "Gunderson" instead of trying (sort of trying...) to say Akinradewo. Of course, even then it would probably be "Fall-uh-KEY Gunderson" or something. And sets would still be to 21 points. I guess if we get that guy again, I'll just be grateful that the commentators aren't Vampiro and Ironhammer together instead.
Not sure what Jordan Thompson's club contract status is, but I think she got herself a nice future raise the other night. More of that please!
Watched the first USA men's match. The narrative was that the USA men were in shambles because T Sander and Russell and whoever had been hurt, and they stunk at the VNL. But then I realized that 6 of their 7 starters already were well-established starters PRIOR to Rio, 5 years ago. And the very experienced men's team has played at a very high level so far.
The women's narrative (on this board) is that they should be good, but will probably underachieve, because winning the VNL doesn't mean anything. Then I watched the women trot out 2 veterans (and Chi maybe should be starting over Foluke, to be honest), 2 who probably don't even make the roster if the Olympics were last year (JWO, and maybe Washington too?), plus 3 more who probably weren't starters even 18 months ago (behind Carlini, Hill/Robinson, and Drews). Starting 5 first-time Olympians. But they should dominate. Gotta say, the narratives seem kinda weird to me. And here's hoping the team plays great!
