If Grote is available this season, I wonder if Crosson will play her at MB or Opp. I think they need her more at MB, but she would contribute more at Opp.
Vs Stanford last night, good to see the middles more involved in the offense...I guess the passing is better? Digging was also better. Seemed like Jensen was setting the middles more than Maeder, but Maeder has a wicked serve.
Mima is getting back to form, doing everything well.
Smoot has not been playing well, lots of errors hitting and not passing well. I wonder if Pantovic could beat her out.
Hoping they can take down USC this Sun, trying to free up my schedule to attend in person. I think USC has more highly touted players, but their play has been disappointing.

CAL looks a lot stronger than last year and the strongest in awhile. They played Stanford close for three sets. Definitely see them beating some PAC teams this season. Yeah having Grote back will add another weapon for them for sure. Bergmark and Smoot are playing strong.

They are only one higher than OSU in conference because the former is the worst pac-12 team

Some things I hope Cal can work on:
1) passing passing passing to allow diversifying the attack instead of just going outside. They really need another OH who can pass for the rotations when Schmidt is in the front row (so no DS) because Smoot just gets targeted. At least when Schmidt rotates to the back row, she is replaced by a DS, so that Mirkovic is passing with DeSa and Shrag. Otherwise maybe try a 2 person serve receive with Mirkovic and Desa.
2) develop a back row attack to take some pressure off the left side. Smoot was hitting from the back roe earlier in the season but didn't see it during the Cal USC match, maybe the passing just didn't allow it.
3) defense...blocking and digging. MBs were often fooled and running the wrong way, leaving USC with 1 on 1 opportunities. Other thing that really stood out was that the back row did not adjust their positions when the MBs went the wrong way leaving just a single blocker...they need to step in and cover the hole
4) tipping effectively. Their tips were not just very obvious, but also more like high lobs giving opponents so much time to get there

By the way, if you went to the USC match, did you notice if Grote took part in the pre-game warmups? I assume Pantovic hasn't suited up because of concussion protocols.

Grote, Belizzi, and Mertens were all dressed. I only remember seeing Grote serving but don't think she was hitting. I think Bellizi was serving and also passing to feed the setter/hitters during the hitting lines. Don't know if Mehrten participated in warm ups, I just noticed her shagging balls. No sighting of Pantovic.

Hoping Cal gets a win vs Colorado tomorrow but it won’t be easy as Colorado has been receiving votes and are doing well to my knowledge. They are however 2-4 in conference play

Cal is 0-12, which is not what we want for any team. Mirkovic is hurt, as is Maeder and Smoot. It’s hard to figure out whether cal will win any conference games or not but I hope they do pull off a few game wins

She really looked to be in pain when she left the court.

I commend the players and coach's for competing in an almost impossible situation. The sportmanship they are showing is humbling.

Cal has one win in their last 40 PAC-12 matches. 1-39 (!)
At least it's against Stanford?

Aside of the seniors, I hope all the others will return next season along with the new recruits to help rebuild the Cal program. GO BEARS!

Cal has one win in their last 40 PAC-12 matches. 1-39 (!) At least it's against Stanford? Yikes. It wasn't that long ago that Cal was making runs to the Elite 8 or better over four consecutive seasons.
