NBC broadcasts the Olympics on NBC, NBCSN, USA, the Olympic Channel, CNBC, and Telemundo. It streams on Peacock and NBCOlympics.com. Not sure how adding in CBS/FOX/Disney would mean more choices for viewers, especially when almost every event is already shown live somewhere.
The IOC does not "truly care" about getting more people to care about the Olympics. The IOC cares about maximizing their revenue. The model of granting exclusive rights to one broadcast partner in each country seems to be working for them. If CBS was allowed to air competing Olympics programming, it would reduce the value of NBC's investment enormously.

Getting more channels surely can offer viewers more choices...in whether some events are shown live or not. The IOC should also realize its TV ratings are falling, Tokyo viewership is a lot lower than Rio. That should ring alarm bells for the IOC.

Very strange ratings would be way down for an Olympic games held largely in the middle of the night compared to one held an hour off EST.

As far as the IOC is concerned, people not having USA Network is NBC's problem.

Live sports TV ratings have been on a downward trend in every single sport for more than a decade.

Live sports TV ratings have been on a downward trend in every single sport for more than a decade. Which means it might be a good idea for the IOC to at least explore the idea of shaking up the current broadcast rights and distribution...

Soccer overall was going through a mass increase in participation and interest even before the 1999 WC win - both men and women. I'd say the WC win accelerated a process that was already underway. As others have noted, it was inescapable - afternoon and prime time, in the USA, not as many TV options for folks, and huge coverage overall. Brandi Chastain's moment where she rips off her jersey and falls to her knees in her sports bra and clenches her fists. Images from that were all over the next day and thereafter.

I suppose the volleyball NT can all emulate Brandi and rip off their jerseys...but I don't think that will have the same effect. P.S-I am kidding of course, yeah soccer was already rising before the 1999 WC win.

The greatest impact would be to create a REAL and DECENT pro league in the US, and the NORCECA too. NCAA is kinda nice when you're a an american-centric, or a state-centric individual in that case. But what has made Basket-ball greater is the NBA, and the WNBA... not the NCAA only for instance.
High school and college sports in the US are awesome for players development, but that's pretty much... all. The world's biggest sports... school ! is the US one, for sure, but when it comes to play at a higher level, to improve and to make a living from your skills, unfortunately US pros, and the NORCECA ones too, have to move to Europe.
That's why world talents come to US universities and colleges before coming back in their countries or moving to Europe, the USA are ok to learn VB, but not to make it a living or to evolve at a world highest level.

It's kind of hypocritical reading US people whinning about not hosting the VB World Championships since 1974 when at the same time they've hosted the Olympics more than some continents... : '84, '96 and winters 2002.
