Getting no entry/ranking points for the Olympics is so absurd. The whole tour and ranking system revolves around qualifying for the Olympics!! I think the idea is that the Olympics is the end goal and a restricted event (and it might be against IOC regulations, I suppouse). I think the World Tour Finals don't award points either (but have very juicy prize money), there could be a similar reasoning there. 2019 WT finals did have points, but that was really a 5* in all but name. And then we have the world championships, also restricted (kind of), also an end goal, but the best points by far of any tournament. So, who knpws what the reason really is.
I am sure this is likely the case. Tennis used to distribute ranking points and then stopped because it was not an "open" event.

The World Tour Finals do not award points if it’s only exclusively for the few teams that made it. In a way, it looks like a “reward” or “exclusive tournament” to cap off the season for the teams who did well recently. And only 2 teams from each country max. The 2019 World Tour Finals in Rome was the first time they awarded points because it was treated like a 5* event and any team who had enough points or qualified through had the chance to collect massive points. Olympics do not award points for beach volleyball probably because only 2 teams max per country can qualify and play whereas for indoor volleyball, it awards the most amount of points because countries as a whole qualify? That’s the only reasoning I can come up with. They do it based on the World Ranking points though so if you look at it, ATeam JUST made the cut, being the “8th ranked team in the world”, whereas Slaes are “2nd ranked team in the world”.

The format will be:
Round Robin in the two pools of 5 teams each Top two teams advance in each pool
Semifinals and finals. So every game matters.

Do you know where to find the updated world rankings? The ones I saw on the FIVB site still had KWJ at 9, so I assume they are incorrect. Are the top and bottom teams in each group the first 4 seeds?

The world rankings with KWJ at 9 may be correct. It says updated September 20. Also, I don’t see the pools listed. It just shows the 10 entrants.

They posted on Instagram but it’s not listed on the FIVB website.

I wonder if they have a rule preventing country vs country in pool play. Anyway, I like that we don't have those early USA vs USA, or SUi vs SUI (or ITA vs ITA in the men's). It may be confirmation bias, but I feel we had too many of those this year.

Oh my god, you might be right. But some of the players were the ones who posted that the pools are out 😅

Quantity is quality for FIVB world tour rank (as opposed to entry rank). Clancy/Artachio are nr. 4 in entry points but only rank 10th due to Covid and only six international competitions (no points for Olympics). Similar for Graudina/Kravcenoka with only four international finishes this past year (Covid and NCAA). Including Olympic finishes at a World Championship level would put both teams in the mix. Also the FIVB not being stupid would put at least Australia in the mix. They won two four stars over the last two FIVB "seasons" is tied for the most, they are from a confederation that is not represented, and they took a silver in the Olympics. The FIVB World rankings, which say they are current and can be found here www.fivb.com/en/beachvolleyball/rankingwomenLets look at some finishes over the 2020 and 2021 seasons and where teams rank: Dutch are ranked 6th - One medal, an injury forfeit bronze. Finished 9th or worse in most of their events Germany 7th - Finished 9th or worse in every four star event except one. Average finish is a 13th. THE 7TH RANKED TEAM IN THE WORLD HAS AN AVERAGE FINISH OF 13TH Ateam - Two wins, two bronzes - Ranked 8th, they almost missed the cut.Australia - Two wins, two silvers - Ranked 10th, they missed the cutAP/Rebecca - One second, finished lower than 5th one time, ranked 34th.Stockman/Kolinske would actually be ranked above Australia and probably the Ateam if they had played one more event. Skipping Chetumal seems to have kept them out of the top 10 and allowed the Ateam to sneak into this tournament???

“As of Sep 20, 2021
Ranking of teams based on the 0 best results at all FIVB recognized events over the last 365 days.”
Obviously that’s a typo. Is it 12 best finishes over the last 365 days?
