State quarterfinal matches at 10 AM on a Thursday in Green Bay. Such a shame. You literally couldn’t make it any worse for attendance. Why the WIAA always needs to ruin anything they do right is beyond me.

I wish something could be done with the sectional playoffs. Make them more balanced. I know they do it geographically (kinda) but the most anyone would drive is 2 hours or so if they made the sections more by rankings vs geography. Some sectionals are absolutely packed and very good teams don't make state and other sectionals have teams that have no business going to state with an easy path. The purist in me would like to see the top 16 teams ranked and put into 8 different "sectionals" based on rankings and not geography.

I also hate seeing weaker teams make it because "geography". One ref I talked to said AD's need to advocate for different sectionals - not sure how accurate that is, but I do wonder if coaches actually talk to their ADs about how unbalanced the sectionals are.

That's a really good question. I don't know how that works. But I know Sectional 3 and three different top 10 teams in it (so 2 are guaranteed not to go to state) and another sectional didn't have a single ranked team in it. So an unranked team is guaranteed to go to state and 2 top 10 teams will be guaranteed to not attend state. That just doesn't seem right to me. Best of luck to the 8 teams competing this week.

WIAA has sucked for decades. If you want something messed up leave it to them.
Any chance any of these matches will have some online stream to watch?

Not that many people are going to pay to sit and watch a stream at 10:00 AM on a Thursday, but I believe WIAA state tournament matches are usually available to purchase online.

I think it's cheaper to buy the stream than it is to attend one match in person. I've never purchased it, but I may be inclined to do so this year! www.wiaawi.org/Media-Center/Watch-Online

Wow, did not see CMH losing in the first round.
Fun fact: Vinny Coello will now be tied for third for attempts in a four set match (58).
The MU vs Tosa East match went as expected, honestly shocked the scores were as close as they were (first set aside).

Why are they alternating the girl's and boy's matches? Just because they know the girl's matches will draw a larger crowd, so they group one set of girl's matches with one set of boy's matches into a "session" and they can then claim that they had "record crowds" for the boys matches to "prove" their move to Green Bay was a great move that is drawing greater crowds and helping to grow the game?

DING DING DING you are correct
The first year the WIAA moved to 4 rounds at state at WLC the match up was Marquette vs Tosa East. The gym was packed to the rafters. This year based on pictures not so much.
I would give anything to go back to Friday night quarterfinal night with 2 matches going on at once at 5pm and 730pm. That gym was packed loud and one of the greatest atmospheres of the season. That was the best night of volleyball all year. Even the semi's and finals were not as loud and as exciting as Friday night.
Also having served as the boys volleyball rep for many years with the WIAA I can assure you that the WIAA could care less about who but from where the teams are who make the state tournament. They want geographical representation.
Whatever they do with volleyball or any sport they have to do across the board for all sports. With that being said I have heard first hand the WIAA state one of their biggest fears in ranking is that that all 8 schools in the boys basketball state tournament would hail from Milwaukee or the suburbs. They want people from all corners of the state coming in.

So will Tom Gulak hang up his coaching shoes, now that Christian will graduate?
