Well. Sheffield playing with lineups a bit. But the badgers came out with two sweeps nonetheless. I imagine they will learn a lot from these matches.

Badgers had 9 blocks. Dayton had none.
Badgers hit 0.344. Dayton hit 0.120.
5- 1 in aces. 3 by Izzy.
Demps hit 0.398. No errors. She looked really good to me. Rettke hit 0.750 with 9 kills and no errors.
Hilley had 6 blocks.

Post game
Smrek is interviewed! Lots of energy from the crowd Learning a lot from the experience. Especially blocking, Needs to work on blocking, especially partnership with OHs. Was getting pulled by the setter. Connection with Hilley is getting better
Sheffield Block was much better on Almodovar after the first set Peterson couldn't carry the whole load, though she was tough from service line and in attack. Lot better job playing the entire match tonight. Jade had a really nice match.
Rettke Felt they left points on the floor last night Effort was better, but lots to improve on.
Jade Sheffield called her out yesterday about not being a presence She really thought about that (It worked!)
White Jade worked the court really well, moved the ball around, played low error volleyball. Put other team in bad situations. Almodovar: Great first set, was picking spots. Told players that they has to anticipate her picking spots. Thought they did better as match went on. Blocking: Working on getting square so they're harder to tool. Devyn called last night to get extra work on that. Players: His and Dildine's cell phones are constantly ringing with texts from players wanting to work on something they've seen on film. Really happy with the commitment. Smrek: Exposing young players to speed, physicality and atmosphere is important. They may need her down the line. She got fooled at times, will learn to handle block better. Kentucky: Great program. Lots of similarities with UW in staff. High powered offense, scrappy defense, much like badgers.

Wisconsin is trying to pass with 2 in most rotations. Had to pull Loberg in to pass with 3 a couple times in set 1 But something to watch going forward. That's what no Orzol brings with it.

I hope Orzol is back next weekend. If not, they may flip the left sides, because Loberg has had more 6 rotation experience than Demps has. Still, either way, a LOT more comfortable with Demps, Jardine, and Gregorski available than with the "creative" lineups with which the program has won matches in Sheffield's tenure at Wisconsin.

There was nothing 'visible' to indicate what's up with Orzol; no knee brace or sleeve, etc, no visible brace etc on an ankle, no K-tape on a shoulder. She wasn't limping visibly. She was wearing her knee pads - sometimes if a player knows they're not playing, they leave the pads in the locker room. But she was involved in only the most minimal part of warmup (though during that two-person knocking balls back and forth, she swung overhead, so...) Whatever it is, it must be pretty minor (he said, wishfully). Minor back tweak? Concussion in practice during the week? Fingers crossed...

After watching Orzol during her brief warm up, I think her sitting out has to do with her left ankle. Although she was handling the drill well, she seemed hesitant to put a ton of pressure on her left leg when she jumped off the ground. With that being said, I don’t think Sheffield would have her out there for that drill if this was a major issue. Hopefully they were only giving her the weekend to take it easy, and to give the ankle more time to heal.

There were two purposes. To challenge the rest of the team to figure it out and find a way to perform without a safety net, and to give Orzol a rest. She was playing on the troublesome ankle throughout summer, and went to Wisconsin almost immediately afterwards. I don't think it's that serious, but it's worth a rest, especially if it helps the rest of the team get minutes and experience without her. I think Sheff is still weighing options at the other left side.

I like how Demps played with confidence last night. My observation from earlier matches was that her main problem was being a bit fearful and lost.

It looked to me like she was favoring that ankle during Varsity both nights.
