Congrats to Indigo Clarke/Avery Jackson (both Stanford 2024) for winning the P1440 Junior National Championships this week. They beat Olivia Le Blanc (UCLA 2025) and Jordyn Scribner (USC 2026) in the finals. Fellow USC commits Grace Fogel (2025) and Emma Champagne (2026) got 5ths. In the P1440 U16, Leann Wise and Janie McCanna (both 2027) beat Macy Ludwig (CalPoly2026) and Shayla Martinez (Washington 2026). Leann Wise continuing to prove herself to be a top 2027 recruit. Here’s the summer championships schedule as per volleyballlife and cbva. Some tourneys are clearly bigger than others. Congrats to the Trojans at Gstaad Elite16 for a very strong showing. Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft take a big step up in their development to get Silver Medals. They beat 4 teams that will be at the Paris Olympics, including #1 AP/Duda. Tina Graudina and her partner Anastasija got a Bronze Medal for the second straight E16. They continue to prove their case as a strong Olympics medal contender. At AVP Denver, Pater/Wood beat Brennan/Myszkowski on their way to the semi-finals. Fight on! ✌️ Let’s go, Trojans!

I think this Gstaad Elite competition (& last year's Montreal Elite)) proved that Tina & Megan, along with Scoles and Harward, were probably the best all-time team. Cheng(Claes) & Hughes with Bukovec and Terese Cannon and Allie Wheeler being a close second.

They beat a variety of older teams, but I’m sure they’re used to that by now. Yeah, 2017 vs 2022 is the normal debate for #1. Funny that you bring up this topic. This hype video from the 2016 season was in my feed and makes the case for that squad as well. Dain gets a couple seconds in the video. Hughes, Claes, Bukovec, Strange, Wheeler, Martin, Bustamante, Belton, Nightingale, Kremer… Cannon on the squad, but didn’t make the top 5 pairs by the end of the season. First NCAA Championship squad.

Nice video with Coach Anna Collier and the old nr. 14 Hughes I know assistant coach Ali Lamberson (2016-2017) also played a part on those teams - and also helped pinpoint Tina Graudina as a recruit at the World U-17s. Largely, I think most of the star athletes were natural talents, but Coach Collier's system ensured their development with focused practices and good physical conditioning. Although I think Cheng blossomed more so after graduation.

First NCAA Championship squad. I checked to see if my memory was correct. Cannon DID play at twos in 2017 with a 9-1 record (season-end) and at threes with a 24-5 record. It's interesting how Bustamante blossomed with Tina in 2018 (National Pair of the Year) after going 19-6 at the fours (with Joy Dennis) in 2017 - and 2-0 at threes with Bukovecc. usctrojans.com/documents/2017/5/10/season_stats.pdf

Cannon was a big part of 2017’s success, but I was mentioning that the first NCAA championship 2016 squad shown in the hype video also should be compared to the best squads as well. That’s the squad I was listing.

This is a rant related to the state of UCLA Beach so if you’re sensitive about such things, then read no further. So previously I had mentioned USC further cementing itself as the Pro Pipeline for Beach Volleyball. Obviously, great players come out of other colleges, but it just seems easier right now to go through the USC program. This was highlighted by a couple recent observations. 1) The clip below is from a recent GRIT interview with Newberry/Whitmarsh and it just blows my mind that these two players graduated from UCLA, decided to try being pro, were flabbergasted that they were the only pair at AVP HB without a coach AND THEN decided to hire Jose Loiola. Jose Loiola was their coach TWICE at UCLA and is/was the head coach of the US Beach VB National Team. How could Newberry/Whitmarsh have gone through 5 years in the UCLA program and not gotten any guidance about becoming a Pro? “But for us, we’re both doing this for the first time and so we really do get so lost and like we are figuring this out completely by ourselves, which makes it feel that much better when we get anything done because it really is just us doing this and our families.” Reminds me of that infamous Lexy Denaburg quote (below) about what she learned at UCLA. ”If I’ve learned anything at UCLA it was how to have fun and go with the flow during the unexpected.” 2) Then today, many weeks after AVP HB, I caught the end of the Pater/Wood vs Brennan/Myszkowski match at AVP Waupaca. Pater/Wood have a coach and Brennan/Myszkowski don’t have a coach! Blows my mind! Could be lots of valid reasons for them not to have a coach, but given the clip below, my thoughts drift towards the more likely explanation. To be honest, the Pater/Wood coach didn’t impress me, but that’s besides the point… http://instagram.com/p/C9La0z9SgaH

To be fair, Pater/Wood usually have Sarah Wood’s dad coaching them so it’s kind of a gimme
