Wisconsin beat Baylor and Kentucky and their SOS is 4th. Louisville beat Purdue , Kentucky and Nebraska. Their SOS is 44th. Fascinating. SOS according to who? The names of Wisky's other victims don't impress me, and I can't help but notice that up to now they've played a lot of home matches, including the ones versus Baylor and Kentucky. Their only road warrior win was over Marquette. Louisville also played Kentucky at home. But the game against Purdue was at a neutral site and Nebraska was on the road. Hmmm..... would you rather face Nebraska or Marquette on the road? Tough choice, isn't it? Strength of schedule determined by RPI/RPI Futures. Are you being paid by the word to defend Louisville being #1? I think most people agree with you that they are a very very good team.

Sos (games played so far) is 21 snd Louisville’s is 28: these numbers dont include games this weekend. Rating system iis Massey. Not that different to date:

I think it's an absolute crime against humanity if Louisville doesn't receive every single #1 vote in both the AVCA and the more prestigious volleytalk poll. You're doing God's work here, aardvark. Don't let anyone tell you different. Personally, in my own mind I think I'm going to rank Louisville ahead of Wisconsin because Wisconsin lost to Maryland, while Louisville is still undefeated, but I'm crazy like that.

If I needed a higher RPI, I'd rather play Wisconsin's schedule at this point. Louisville has some usually decent teams who have poor records so far. Wisconsin has: RPI 1-25 Baylor (6-3) Kentucky (8-3) RPI 26-50 Marquette (11-2) Maryland (13-0) RPI 51-100 Dayton (8-5) X2 TCU (6-6) RPI 151- Northern Illinois (7-5) Green Bay (7-7) Louisville has: RPI 1-25 Purdue (9-1) Kentucky (8-3) Miami (9-2) RPI 26-50 Nebraska (8-3) RPI 51-100 Cal Poly (4-9) Northern Kentucky (5-5) RPI 101-150 Arizona State (7-5) Xavier (6-6) RPI 151- South Dakota (4-6) TAMU-CC (5-7) Missouri (3-11)

SOS is from figstats, which shows Louisville up to 36 now. Ah. RPI futures. Isn't that the same measuring stick that last week ranked Louisville third, behind only Pitt and Wisconsin? Based on Wisconsin's loss since then, you might well see the Cards at #2 on the next iteration of it. The prime weakness of the RPI is that it penalizes playing (and beating) really bad teams. Wisconsin having an SOS edge over Louisville turns out to be due to their playing only "sort of bad" teams (Dayton, TCU) at home where it's safe versus traveling freaking across the country to play "really bad" teams like Cal Poly and Arizona State. OK. Louisville did host a three team invitational tourney of Missouri/South Dakota/Northern Kentucky that worked wonders in dragging down their SOS. So It's partly their fault, isn't it? Nonetheless, a cupcake is still a cupcake, and if you're leaning on easy wins to distinguish Wisconsin's SOS as better than Louisville's, then you're on thin icing.

Texas, Wisconsin, and Pittsburgh all laid legitimate claims to #1 coming into this week, in my opinion of course. Someone might even say Louisville has an argument! Who has Wisconsin played this year that was any good? Nobody. Any claims about them being #1 is entirely based on making the FF last year. Louisville "only" made the final 8 last year, losing in 5 sets to a Washington team that lost in the title match. In contrast, they have a long slate of impressive wins this year. If you didn't think the Cards were a legit #1 call, then you have a blind spot. Actually Washington lost in the final four to Kentucky. But Louisville I would say is up there as well as far as title contenders. The ACC is going to be nice to watch, especially when Louisville and Pitt meet up.

I suppose I could have simply made an edit of my post to fix it, but I'm more inclined to admitting a mistake than papering over it. Anyway, my head cold is much better today and I no longer have a foggy brain. And yet, I *still* think Louisville is worth putting on a very short list of title contenders. I also think most people agree that thin icing is terrible for cupcakes. Either slather it on, or eat it without.

Where are we at with the winless and undefeated tracker? Only Pittsburgh, Louisville, Texas, and Ole Miss are undefeated. interesting that everyone seems so resistant to putting ole Miss in the top 25. I know they have less matches overall vs top 25 opponents and just the 1 win, but only 4 teams have managed to stay undefeated this long. And they’re in fantastic company with the other 3. 9 out of their 12 wins were on the road. 1 top 25 win vs WKU, on the road, snapping their 54 match winning streak (excluding ncaa tourney matches) plus good wins vs coastal Carolina, @ Indiana, @ Troy, and @ auburn. Not at all saying they’re a lock. Just interesting their resume seems to be lesser to most people than the resumes of Colorado, Marquette, Boise state, North Carolina, San Diego, Pepperdine, Florida State etc.

Yes. Right now they are undefeated. Love Coach Banwarth and Ole Miss potential. But since they won only one match last year, lots are a little slow to jump on the Hot Toddy bandwagon until they see more.
