1) I disagree with your use of "xenophobia" -- which generally is defined as "fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign." Nothing in that article is remotely xenophobic. Nor is a ban on Russian teams and players. Those actions simply say to Putin and to the Russian people -- "there are many costs to the barbaric Russian invasion of Ukraine. We won't let you ignore it." 2) You don't like the "collateral damage" of athletes who may (I stress "may") not be supporters of the Ukraine war or of Putin, but that misses the point. Putin is engaged in sportswashing to the nth degree -- that's not pseudo-intellectualism, that's simple observation over a long period of time. You may think that the bans don't have any effect. You're entitled. I disagree. if xenophobia is the wrong word then fine, i dont know the jingoist specific term for hatred or discrimination of this specific ethnic group of people who arent necessarily a race. Russian restaurants in america and europe have been ransacked. The rhetoric around this is very similar to 2001 with arabic muslims and it makes me very worried. Nonetheless it is still discriminating against innocent people who have no say in the matter. Your dismissal of this as “collateral damage” is heartless. (Yes of course what is happening to Ukraine is heartless. Two wrongs dont make a right and retribution should not go to innocent bystanders) If you want to go take the risk of overthrowing a powerful dictator then be our guest but its ridiculous to put that on the shoulders of people when likely we wouldnt have anywhere close to that kind of bravery ourselves. It is evil. It is not going out of the way to placate these people, it is literally going out of the way to discriminate against them, with an insane hope they will do something dangerous that none of us have the guts to do ourselves. What is the more likely result of all of this? That the russian people will do as we be like “lets overthrow putin so the people who hate us will tolerate us again?” Or that they will resent the discrimination and harden any support for someone like putin who claims to be fighting back against “the West”? Of course it is the latter. As far as it shaming Putin that his athletes cannot dominate sport because of these bans, this seems incredibly farfetched. But i support the national teams being banned for that reason. This is the right thing to do. The discrimination against private athletes and people? No. This is an interesting read, and gives more context as to why sports sanctions against Russia could have a strong impact: www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/water-activities/plot-kill-olympics/

wishful thinking pseudo-intellectualism justifying punishment of innocent people with nothing to do with the Russian government’s actions, and willfully justifying pushing of xenophobia into mainstream culture. Stay tuned at 7 for coverage of mass vodka dumping. Is this 2001 all over again? you're looking at sports in Russia with red-white-blue glasses. governments like russia's and china's glorify themselves and incite domestic patriotic zeal thru sports. this is simply not the appropriate time to allow the russian government to do that. the athletes are collateral damage unfortunately, and some of them may not be so innocent if they support Putin's willful inflicting unjustified pain and damages upon a sovereign neighbor.

It may be too late for foreign players to get out, but staying in Russia is a big risk. Particularly for American and Polish players.
