Four US teams are in the Netherlands this week playing the Nijmegen 1 Star.
On the men's side, Troy Fields and Miles Evans are the 3 seed, coming off their silver in Italy last weekend. They won their pool and are straight into the quarterfinals tomorrow. Travis Mewhirter played with Tim Brewster but lost in the qualifier.
On the women's side, Jessica Gaffney and Kim Hildreth advanced to the main draw with two qualifier wins. They won their pool to advance to the quarterfinals. Delaney Mewhirter and Terese Cannon are the 2 seed in the main draw and also won their pool. Looks like the two teams will meet in the semifinals if both win their quarterfinal matches. I'm assuming Delaney is playing full-time defense in this event.
Perhaps Troy will be streaming his match on Twitch tomorrow, scheduled for noon Eastern time. Semifinals and finals for both genders will be Sunday and the European Volleyball YouTube channel is scheduled to live stream all those matches.

Last week the Dutch Volleyball Youtube channel stremed from the quarterfinals onwards. Not sure why they don't do this for this event. I'd bet for German American final on the women side, on the men side I'd like to see the English brothers in the final.

Troy/Miles advances to the semifinals with an easy win over Canada’s Hoey/MacNeil, 21-14, 21-14 I believe. First time I’ve seen this Canadian team after reading Travis write about them a couple of times. Interesting team to watch. Lots of errors. Hoey is huge but doesn’t jump much on his approach. Still, they have some potential.
On the women’s side, Terese/Delaney advance to the semis but Jessica/Kim are out.

Both US teams playing for gold coming up shortly.
Both teams facing opponents with one more accomplished player playing with a lesser non-regular partner. Stefan Boermans is the Dutch player who just won Gstaad with de Groot. And Sarah Schulz has been winning German events with Chantal.
Edit: Both of these “lesser” partners are 19!

Delaney keeping her onesie tradition alive by wearing a men’s tank top over her suit.
Fairly strong cross wind leading to many service aces and winners. Going three sets now.

USA women win gold, 15-8 in the third. Delaney made some nice plays and transition kills on defense. I’d like to see her continue playing defense. Cannon with a couple blocks but mostly they avoided the errors.
The German 19 year old is a smallish but athletic lefty with a decent jump spin serve and the ability to really bounce some balls in system. Setting was a bit inconsistent though. Schultz wasn’t much of a factor at the net.

Troy and Miles also win gold, 21-17, 21-15. Boermans was clearly the best player on the court but they did a good job keeping the ball away from him. His 19 year old partner made too many errors in his side out game. Troy and Miles both played better today than in last week’s finals.

Very cool that Delaney found a big to travel with her and play in this tournament - hopefully it is a foreshadowing of things to come for her if she can focus more on defense and hook up with a decent big! 2nd win in a tournament of some importance is awesome for her!
