To me, the Hawaii games showed a lot about this team. One night they're getting wrecked; the next night they're a totally different team. They're going to be so up and down. This has been the USC identity since Bricio graduated. An up and down, erratic, hot mess, that can sometimes be dangerous and beat very very good teams! Other times... well.... look away. 2017 was my favorite exemplification of this: -USC lost a match in mid-November at Stanford (-16, -12, -14). They scored just 42 points. I believe this was the worst lost and lowest scoring match in the Mick Haley era at USC (close to 20 years!!). -Just a few weeks later, USC has match point at Florida in the Elite 8 and is about to be Final Four bound, but, didn't work out unfortunately (It should be mentioned that USC also needed 5 sets to get out of the second round vs. San Diego or they wouldn't have even made the Regionals) Did you think SC were up and down in this match?

Did you think SC were up and down in this match? I didn't get to watch the match in its entirety. The post was also more about how different SC can look from one match to the next, not within the same match, though that can certainly also be true as well! One thing I did see was a lot of easy tips on the fast BIC sets. Like... they're just picked up so easily and a waste of an attack and UCLA was gobbling them up. I also think it's a shame that USC can't get a 3rd pin hitter to hit above ~.150. Maybe Scully to OH2 really is a lot worse than what they're at now. Who knows. I still would like to at least see it.

You should watch it. The speed of the bic was the reason Botkin was getting kills on it. SC were better than I expected. They passed well and had one of their best serving performances of the season. For 3 sets they were competitive with one of the most physical teams in the country. Georgia Tech was only competitive for one set vs UCLA and GT are better than SC. The system is good, SC just aren't as talented as the top teams in the Pac but have they done anything this season (including the split with a bad Hawaii team) to make you think they were?

I'm stunned by the stats -- USC outpassed UCLA by a pretty decent margin. Didn't feel that way watching the match.

Remember our conversation in the spring when they took your Ducks to 5? On a good day, SC are the toughest serving team in the Pac and can get even the best passing teams out of system. SC lost that match against Oregon because they couldn't pass and they can't terminate OOS. That is why Scully is playing libero. If she doesn't have to hit she can just focus on passing. The problem for Keller is their arms aren't good enough. UCLA 'only' passed a 2.15 and still hit .333. The Trojans passed a 2.34 and hit .179. SC doesn't have one Mac May and UCLA has two of them. They also have the best libero in the country. Coaching isn't the issue for SC. They just need more talent!

Watching the game film this morning and I don't know why no one mentioned these UCLA MBs. They are a huge upgrade over their starters in the spring. They are both in the top 7 in the Pac in blocks/set and Alupei is hitting .404 with Dodson at .311. Look at these two stuffs by the freshman on back to back points. The close on the second one when SC are in a freeball situation... Wow. And yes, Luper is special. I said this after the GT match but she reminds me of Yossi (with better ball control). I sort of did. I said I'd take any of UCLA's 3 middles over Sabrina Smith. UCLA upgraded there.

Every player hit over .300 except for May. May had such an awesome season in 2019. What has happened to her? (other than being Sealy'd, which heretofore I had thought only applied to setters?)
