Wow. Slow start turns into a whipping. 3 players in double digit kills and 4 players hitting above 35%? .387 as a team for the match? We need more midday games.

Bays continues to look more comfortable, love what I'm seeing from her. Nice weekend for Bush, didn't hit as well in UCLA match but very good experience for her to be in there grinding it out in a 5 setter win.

To alwayslearning: EMP did just what you told her to do: serve like she can.

To alwayslearning: EMP did just what you told her to do: serve like she can. Ha! Yeah, she seems to have gotten the memo. Six aces! She was instrumental in deflating USC in this match.

First set there were several that looked just the same, but were just long. That last set, she was painting the back line with USC receivers convinced they were out.

Back from the match and so happy that the Heart Attack Huskies took the day off and gave us some solid, winning volleyball instead. I'm thinking this qualifies as the best overall volleyball I've seen the Huskies play this season, with everyone making positive contributions.
Perhaps most auspiciously, after a shaky first set, the Huskies won -- by a lot -- the serve/serve receive battle. Ella May was out of this world, as noted above. But let's also recognize that the Huskies are developing another deadly weapon: the serve of Lauren Bays. Bays had only one ace but consistently kept USC out of system. What I love about Bays is the incredible diversity in her serves. She has an excellent short serve, but can serve it hard and flat to the back. She can also drop a cross-court serve in nicely. All in the course of a single serving rotation.
While on the subject of Bays, I have to say she no longer looks like a freshman. That's after two and a half matches of playing libero. She has really stabilized the back row defense and has a nice bump set. Just really taking charge. This frees up Crenshaw to do something she is very good at: making spectacular, athletic digs in the back row. Shannon is often standing behind three receivers in our serve receive (Bays, Hoffman, and Drechsel), and that helps with the blood pressure. I'm looking forward to the day we see Shannon play a little front row again.
Ok, how about the hitters? Emoni Bush had, by far, her best outing of the season. If she can continue to read the block, hit high hands, and make smart decisions at the net, she'll give Endsley a run for her money. I'm sure Madi will be back in there as soon as she is 100%, but it was heartening to see Bush have such a good game.
And Hoffman and Drechsel are in really good form to the tune of .361 and .348 percentages. Claire is one of the savviest, smartest hitters I've seen wear a Husky uniform. Sam is blasting away like last spring. I'm guessing the coaching staff told all of our hitters to hit high hands because, after hitting into the teeth of the block for the first 1.5 sets, they did just that.
I will even praise our floor defense in this match, something of a sore point for me this season. Maybe it is Bays making things easier for the other players, maybe it is just progress; I'll take it.
This was the weekend the Huskies really needed.

USC has a lot of talent, no doubt about it. Very efficient, passing dimes in the first set. From the second set on, however, they seemed to lose confidence, which is what tends to happen when your passing breaks down. They also gave UW a lot of gifts in the form of service errors, hitting errors, and just unforced errors in general.
Overall, this was not the generally consistent high level volleyball we saw from UCLA (excepting Friday night's third set). UCLA seemed to have a little more grit and generally better defense. UW had a really hard time stringing together more than two or three points in a row against UCLA (and vice versa); USC gave up quite a few runs.
I was of two minds when Keller put in Tuaniga. My first reaction was why do this when Lazaro wasn't playing all that poorly; it was mostly bad passing that got USC in trouble. On the other hand, USC's offense had gone AWOL in the third set and maybe Tuaniga could ignite something. She didn't but I'm not saying it's her fault. I will say she is fun to watch. Very soft hands and seemingly fearless in her choice of sets. It's also fun to see a shorter player cranking the topspin serve.

Two observations: 1) USC found a weak spot in the Husky defense in the first set: loopy rolls to the deep corners were all dropping. They were placing them very well and UW's middle back was not getting to them. Starting in the second set, Shanon chased a couple down and that shot was less effective for the rest of the match. while future opponents may look at the tape and try that approach, I think/hope that having seen it, UW will adjust more quickly, 2) UW was off to their too-usual slow start in the first set, when Cook called a timeout around 3-8. They managed to find the switch that they flipped after the second set against UCLA and picked up the play from there on (even though they still lost that first set).

UW was +20 points. What was the source of these points?
Aces +5 SE +7
So more than half their winning advantage came from points directly on the serve.
Blocks +6 Blocking errors -5
At first I thought the blocking game was a big source of points, but if you include the Huskies being in the net, the blocking advantage was minimal in terms of direct points.
What about offense?
Non-block hitting errors +2 Kills minus blocking errors +7 bad set -1
=======
(I have looked and looked at this, but it doesn't add up to +20. There is either something wrong with my addition or something wrong with the box score.) (It looks like there were only 11 Husky blocks in the play-by-play, but they are credited with 12 in the box score. And no, there were no triple blocks. But the play-by-play is suspect.)
