Interesting, Salima commentating on the Piacenza/Ravenna match. Looks like she’s a mainstay I am not a fan of her commentating to the point that I considered muting the match as a whole. There's something with her energy and delivery that feels off to me. I will continue to support her.... As long as she is doing her homework. If this is going to be her future and she ....or anyone must look at it as a profession and not a gig. Hopefully she will be compensated as such.

I was out of town and didn't watch any Italian matches this weekend. Anderson's stats were really good. I was not expecting that from him.
It is good to see Brizard is feeding Holt a lot. I hope this trend continues.
Loved seeing Gabi being thrown into the deep end and treading water.

Week 1 Updates so far Perugia 3-0 Top Volley CisternaAnderson had 63% positive pass percentage! Pretty darn solid... Perugia's pin trio is exciting. Cisterna is interesting with Swarzc playing opposite but they don't really have the weapons + their passing was not looking too great! Monza 3-1 ModenaMatch of the weekend! The differential in passing wasn't as large as it seemed, but Monza had a higher share of perfect passes. Monza seemed to have nice offensive balance and were getting enough touches to transition well. Modena certainly has their stars, but Ngapeth and Nimir weren't as efficient as they'd like. Piacenza 3-1 RavennaPiacenza's got some nice options on the pins, but this match was probably closer than they'd like. Passing for Ravenna got better as the match wore on, but Piacenza was able to squeak out the win. Lube 3-0 PadovaLube swept, but the passing numbers didn't look too pretty for Juantorena. But, luckily for them, Padova's passing wasn't good either. I like Loeppky and Weber for Padova. Gabi Garcia Fernandez's numbers don't look that impressive but it was his debut. There's rumors that Padova is interested in Japanese OH Ran Takahashi, but I have no idea if it's true. Takahashi is still in University, so I'm unsure about the logistics. But, he could definitely help shore up the passing and as a Japan fan I'd be thrilled to see him in Italy. Vibo Valentia 3-1 TarantoOf all the matches, I think Vibo Valentia played with the most fire and energy. The Brazilian trio was really fun to watch. Pretty nice debut for Nishida, and I think if he got more consistent with his serve, he could be one of the best servers in the world. Taranto's passing tho... yikes. And the stats have Vibo Valentia at 70% positive pass on the match! Both teams had their fair share of service errors. Will be interested to see how the termination / block + D look like for Vibo Valentia against the top teams but I like their energy. Trentino 3-0 VeronaIt was a sweep but the last two sets were close, albeit Michieletto saw limited action. Lavia wasn't the greatest, I'll be interested to see his trajectory. Verona's got some nice young pins but the passing wasn't too pretty.

Damn does Max Holt look strong.
Piacenza takes down Lube 3-2.
Aaron also looked good in his limited action. Tons of depth on this Piacenza team.

Milano wins 3-2. Really fun match, and some nice defense and transition plays by Milano in the 5th set. Jaeschke was really solid. He may not always bring the fireworks or pure power, but he was scoring with some really smart swings.

Solid complete game Perugia 3 Verona 1 Russell had 4 pts in only 1 game Holt 13 points 9/12k and 4 blocks Piacenza 3 Civitanova 2 Jaeschke 18 points - very solid all around Milano 3 Monza 2

This week's update:
Piacenza 3-2 Lube Not the prettiest match at times, but a fun one. Lagumdzija is so damn good, finishing with 31 kills! Piacenza's still trying to figure out their pin combo, but Rossard/Antonov were inserted and kept in towards the end. Holt with really nice offensive production as well. Lube's OH combo weren't that great today and they just couldn't do enough about Lagumdzija.
Trentino 3-1 Vibo Valentia The trio of Vibo Valentia pin hitters weren't that effective today and passing was worse than Trentino. Nishida was getting some tough looks, but also was getting defended well. His serve can be a serious weapon, but the errors were a bit frustrating. I'm wondering how Trentino's pin situation will fare against the upper tier teams. I do think they could probably try to get a few more balls to their middles.
Milano 3-2 Monza After a slow start, Milano was able to squeak out a 2nd set win and then keep their control of the match in set 5. I thought Ishikawa's passing looked a bit shaky in the beginning but the stats had him at 54% positive and 31% excellent which is actually solid. Monza's offense sorta fell off and I thought Orduna was not very good today after the first set. On the other hand, the youngster Porro got better as the match wore on although his decision making/location will definitely need to keep improving. Jaeschke and Chinenyeze had great matches for Milano.
Perugia 3-1 Verona Mozic popped off but it wasn't enough against a stacked Perugia team. Passing for Verona is not one of their strengths either. Really nice match from Anderson with 16 kills and 67% positive pass and 37% perfect pass.... does he need to receive for Team USA? Lolol. Nice to see Ter Horst get some action and Rychliki probably wants to forget this match hehe.
Taranto 3-0 Ravenna Battle of the bottom teams as Taranto gets the sweep. Passing was relatively even between the teams, but Taranto's offense looked a lot better than Ravenna's (+ the better blocking by Taranto).
Padova 3-1 Top Volley Cisterna Cisterna's passing did not look good oof, while Padova was okay in the passing dept. Maar looked solid offensively, but the rest of the offense for Cisterna wasn't really doing enough. Bottollo had a good match, and Loeppky was also solid. Weber needs to be more effective offensively though.

I thought Jaeschke was did a good job picking up the slack when it seemed that Patry disappointed. He passed very well, much better than Ishikawa, and hit .435.
As far as Anderson passing... he is the best passing non-libero in Italy at this point. He said that when he was with Kazan they joked he was a second libero because Leon and Mikhailov were so commanding at the net. He is also hitting .547 (the best of any pin-hitter). Playing at Perugia isn't easy, they expect perfection. Sirci has shown he is not opposed to blowing everything up in the middle of the season to try and fix something immediately. I hope he can maintain health and a healthy level of production this year. The pieces are in place to make a good run.

And I hate to say this because I love Russell, but the Piacenza is better with Rossard on the floor. Antonov just sort of mopes/wanders around the court, but they need an Italian OH. It is a great roster for CEV competitions... but they are not in any.

I was impressed by Jaeschke, but I do wonder how his termination will hold up especially when he's getting medium system or out of system sets. Kinda want to see him be a tad more aggressive and he doesn't seem to be the most powerful hitter. His craftiness is definitely a plus though.

Anyone else having issues watching the replays on Volleyballworld? I've been trying to watch the Milano/Monza match and the quality is so terrible that I have cancelled my pass (before being charged, thankfully).

After the 1st set they struggled. Juantorena, who I hold in high regard, looked....slow and old. Piacenza is dominating through the middle and rightside.

I've been trying to watch the Milano/Monza match and the quality is so terrible that I have cancelled my pass (before being charged, thankfully). That specific game had a technical difficulty during the live game in 1st - 2nd set, that's why the quality of that match is really terrible. The sets 3 onwards in that game are fine.

I’m excited to watch Matt at Perugia this season. It seems that they have a lot of potential lineups but he is starting in all of them so far. He seems to be connecting really well with Gianelli, who’s giving him a lot of good looks.
Of course Leon is still the “go-to” guy, but it’s a different situation than in Kazan. I’ve always questioned Butko’s decision making as a setter, but Perugia will be fun to watch with their depth and versatility
