Kuper has been terrible this season. Especially bad in conference with 4 aces and 24 service errors. Would love to see Barnes wear the libero jersey but that won't happen.

I mean, yeah that serving ratio is not good but serving is only one aspect of being a libero. We haven't gotten to see Barnes serve yet this season but one might infer that Nunge stays on to serve because her serve is more effective. I'd bet that Barnes's passing stats are better than Kuper's but Taylor's defensive reads, quickness, and dig quality have to be the best on the team. I've seen folks on VT debate whether to prioritize passing or floor defense when deciding who their libero should be. When Kuper graduates, I'm confident Barnes will be a solid libero for the Illini and easing into that role after a season as DS might be an easier transition than taking the libero reins as a freshman. |
