C-USA, trying to stay viable, is talking to New Mexico St, UConn and Liberty about joining conference. Talk about desperation. Talking to three schools that have no connection to each other and likely not much to the current remaining teams. Read an opinion awhile back that is becoming more accurate with each passing event in the realignment. The opinion was that the G5 conferences need to blown up and reorganized on a regional basis. Well yeah, they have no choice but to scrape the bottom of the barrel. What did you expect them to do, raid the SEC?

What really needs to happen is one conference needs to go away. Just spread the teams out. But that won’t happen because some conference commissioner is going to want to keep their cushy job.
And probably at least one lower level D1 conference should go away as well.

The Metro Conference died in 1995. The Southwestern Conference died in 1996. The last commissioner has been running the Big South ever since. So if we can find a landing spot for Judy McLeod maybe this can happen.

Name one Conference that has ever done this. The Big West and the Wac are still around, fergawdsakes. The Southwest Conference has been dead since 1996. That's true. At any rate, what is the problem? So some teams have an opportunity to move up and improve their lot. Everyone always says "why can't American sports have promotion and relegation like international soccer, it's so cool." Well this is it my friend. It's called Conference realignment. Texas and Oklahoma got promoted from the Big 12 to the SEC. The Big 12 then promoted the 4 best G5 teams to P5. Then AAC promoted 6 from the bottom of G5 to the top. Now the bottom of G5 has to add the FBS independents that nobody wanted, as well as probably promoting a few of the top FCS teams. That's how teams move up. They position themselves to be in the best position to be added to a better Conference when some spots open up.

And yes, it's roughly similar to promotion and relegation, except it only happens maybe once every 10 years or so, rather than every year, and it's far less structured in who gets promoted and who gets relegated and why. Speaking of which, I'm always amused at this suggestion when it's applied to pro sports in the US. Promotion and relegation is never going to happen in the NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL.

I don't follow the MLS at all, but I don't think they would establish a pro/rel system. They would simply contract some teams.

In a way they already have, although more like NCAA Conference realignment. Several of the current MLS programs came up through the USL, like Cincinnati.

I must admit that I have never heard of the USL. Have any MLS teams been relegated back to the USL?

Its the football playing conference that are unstable right now and the Big West has been a stable conference since dropping football years ago.

Conference USA was the result of 2 conferences coming to an end -- The Metro (mentioned above) and The Great Midwest - I have to admit I do not remember that league.
