This also potentially kills Western Kentucky's chances to go to the MAC, as they probably don't want to have 13 schools. My read on the situation was that neither school really wanted to go to the MAC, but needed a viable alternative if Conference USA imploded. So they negotiated an entrance to the MAC while CUSA scrambled. Looks like they're content with the additions of Liberty, Jacksonville St, New Mexico State and Sam Houston. You can't ignore the huge perk of having just 5 schools (MTSU, WKU, FIU, UTEP, La Tech) collect the exit fees from the 9 departing schools - something like $27 million. It's possible some of that money was used to entice the new members but I'm sure those 5 will get a nice short-term boon. Especially compared to paying $3 million to leave CUSA and join the MAC.

I think Western Kentucky wanted to go: I agree that the exit fees are the primary reason why Middle Tennessee is staying, and it's a silver lining for Western Kentucky.

Kind of sucks that the WAC FB relaunch is getting ate up before it even starts.

I honestly couldn't have said which conference Loyola Chicago is in right now. Missouri Valley, apparently. At any rate, judging by the NET conference rankings, the A-10 is ranked several spots higher than the MVC, so this seems like a good move for both Loyola and for the A-10.

Kind of sucks that the WAC FB relaunch is getting ate up before it even starts. The WAC went from having a consensus national football champion to discontinuing football altogether in less than 30 years. Though I guess the Big East did the same thing in less than half the time (Miami won the title in 2001 with one of the best teams ever, and the conference broke apart in 2013).

They haven't qualified for the tournament since 2004.

Lake Michigan looks like the Atlantic if you squint hard enough makes more sense than Creighton in the "Big East" or all the conferences that have numbers in their conference name, but who have more (or fewer) members than that number indicates.

The Big East generates wayyyy more revenue for Creighton to make it worth it to fly all of their Olympic sports teams every weekend. The A10 does not generate that much. Only St Louis and Dayton will be driveable. This is a weird move.

The Missouri Valley Conference is typically a 1-2 bid league, while the A-10 is a 2-3 bid league. If Loyola Chicago aspires to get in the Big East, then this is a step toward potentially accomplishing that. It could be somewhat reminiscent of UCF in football. They were FCS as recently as 1995, moved up to FBS as an independent in 1996, went to the MAC in 2002, C-USA in 2005, the AAC in 2013 and now the Big 12 in 2023. Loyola must think that whatever they sacrifice now as a result of increased travel costs will be made up later due to better opportunities for their men's basketball program. Also, reviewing the comments on the relevant Reddit threads, it seems that the A-10 is a better institutional fit for Loyola than the MVC as well. This makes sense, as the A-10 has a number of similar schools (Catholic and/or located in big cities) to Loyola. This kind of thing matters in realignment.

I get they have a travel advantage with O'Hare and Midway, but men's hoops is their premier program, and how is that helped by this? None of the other programs in the league has been really good recently, and the MVC did not hold them back from the Final Four and the win over Illinois in the second round. Just more travel for all the programs.
