UCLA looked like they can challenge for the championship. UW either needs to serve a whole lot tougher or pass a whole lot better. Today they did neither.

UW hit .118. They were in negative territory for much of the match.
The passing to EMP was "difficult" at best.

Probably had a plane to catch, but just one quick quote from KCook on the UW website:

UCLAβs back row is elite! Hard to get anything down with Fleck, May, McCall and Luper patrolling the back, they looked like a natty team

What is going on with WA? Hoffman only 2 kills so far. Bush hitting negative. How could Washington be so flat? They did beat them when they hosted

They did beat them when they hosted As I said at the time, if Luper played in the first match, UCLA wins in 3. The May, McCall and Luper lineup is really good. The ability to move the passers around to get Fleck in the middle of the passing unit so she can steal balls is a trick very few teams have. When she keeps them in system, that offense is a problem.

Yet, Fleck still only managed to get 6 serve receptions in the match. She passed 28 balls on the weekend for an 82% good pass and 50% FBSO rate on her passes. By taking so much floor in SR she forces teams to serve sidelines, so they can't serve as hard or they make more service errors. UW are a tough serving team. UCLA passed a 63% against them. A healthy Oregon (the best passing team in the country) passed a 50% in their match with UW. McCall as the 6-ro Opp gives UCLA that flexibility in SR.

I would love to see the service reception stats for both teams. Box score doesnβt show those, just SA, SE, RE. 2, 8, 3 and 3, 4, 2 for UCLA and Washington respectively. EMP was constantly running all over to set the second ball out of serve receive.

Teams are likely trying to avoid serving at Fleck, kind of like teams staying away from shutdown corners in football. I first noticed this phenomenon in volleyball with Mary Lake, as her digs/set totals declined every season. I found this a little confusing at first until I realized the obvious. Why hit at her when you can take your chances with someone else? That's why Deion and Revis had low interception totals during their peak years.

Wow. Got our butt kicked. Was UCLA that good? Offensively, yes. Back row, for sure. McCall complements Fleck so well, and May and Luper were off/on as usual (on defense and serve receive). McCall takes away a lot of left side tipping that works against most teams. The puzzle to me was that UDub seemed to lose confidence in serve receive. So EMP had little to work with most of the time. It's not like UCLA is known for tough serving, and the serves that UDub failed to pass in system were pretty typical... hardish, flat float serves... good, solid serving but nothing exceptional. I feel like there were a few sub par passes and then it became a mental thing.
