What is going on with USC? Apparently terrible coaching or unmotivated players. They don’t want to play the post-season. They gave up.

This is a match U$C can win! Nope.

Colorado takes the win, 3-1
CU defense was good and Tabron is getting better every match.

Hart hit .818 on 9 kills!
Tabron hit .250, was the kill leader in the match at 18 kills, and had 2 aces.
CU had 9 aces against USCs 14 service errors. That was the difference in general. USCs serve-receive and defense was not good.

Like I said USC is up and down. This was a down for them. Owes and Weske did not show up to play. Botkin is not effective enough to carry the pin on her own, and Hammons is not the answer. USC needs more reliable pins, which seems like they will get next year. Tuaniga really shouldn't be serving. 6 service errors is a lot for one player to have! Tabron continues her hot streak and carrying COL. No other hitter even reached 10 kills. Their solid defense and strong serving gave them the advantage tonight.

Even though it doesn't completely show when looking at the stats, I feel like Hart has been having a slow year (despite her seemingly nice night - good % but obviously isn't carrying the team without more attempts). Maybe it's just her demeanor....without Clayton this team just lacks the offensive firepower, almost more so in the mental sense. I feel like a broken record but Ewert, DeLuzio carry this team right now and neither is a hitter. Without that Clayton energy, it's hard (her talent helped too but there's that overlap of talent and attitude, and I definitely think the attitude is the biggest issue right now). Tabron seems to be stepping up, but Campbell (a freshman) just can't handle this offensive load or the expectations just yet. I'll admit I kinda suck at evaluating talent...I'm having a hard time telling whether Tabron's ascension is because she's getting better or if it's just that she's filling a void left by Clayton. And Campbell I can't tell if she's still just adjusting to the college game (ala Tabron possibly?) or if she really is just limited in what she can produce offensively.

And Campbell I can't tell if she's still just adjusting to the college game (ala Tabron possibly?) or if she really is just limited in what she can produce offensively. Hart hasnt connected as much with Ewert this season. Lots of tips because sets are lower or a bit off from what she expected. Still, she has a high efficiency (top 10 in PAC) and has always battled hand injuries. Campbell has a lingering ankle injury that she is playing on. She probably shouldn't be playing...and wasn't supposed to until the Clayton suspension. She has been timid because of this. She should get better....although I do see she still needs to be smarter on her hits. Time will tell if the college game and coaching development will make her better or not. Tabron is getting better each match and has MORE firepower than Clayton does. She jumps higher and hits harder. A little more consistency and shot selection smarts, and she will be more effective than Clayton. She is young. You can see she has a high ceiling of opportunity. Clayton got most of her kills off tools. Tabron doesn't....not yet. She also moves well on defense and is improving on passing. Very excited that she can become a star in the PAC. Although an off night against USC, Schneg has done well overall at OPP since it's a new position for her. Her hitting efficiency has been above expectations. She does need to move quicker on defense. Kuehl is also getting better and has been more efficient at the slide lately. Needs to move quicker and read blocks better. Ewert is a warrior and she keeps the energy on the team, but honestly, a lot of her sets are off or too low. I'm not talking about out of system sets that aren't her fault... I'm talking about in system sets. This affects the "firepower" of the hitters. Still think she is a great setter and one of the better ones in the PAC, but her set location isn't always the best. When Parker comes back next year, she will be the team leader on the floor. She is already giving a lot of feedback while on the bench. This is assuming Ewert and DeLuzio aren't coming back. I'm pretty sure they both still can come back because the COVID spring season doesn't count and that would mean they both have one more season of eligibility if they want it.

Colorado has been better the last few matches. If they converted 3 match points against Oregon, they would be 6-7 in the PAC and likely in the Top half. This team may get more wins than expected in this final half of the season now that they are settling in with new personnel. No one can sleep on them.

Campbell is young and it shows, doubt she was even going to see the floor this season..(redshirt) but there are no other pins on this roster and I think she's gaining more confidence every match. I watched the CU preseason intersquad scrimmage and comparing Tabron now to then is tenfold. She is hitting much harder and smarter and her defense and passing are developing with the same consistency. I disagree that she's hitting harder than clayton was. I think they are both equally athletic but clayton had the experience edge. (I believe she's also shorter hence more tools) You just can't replace an OH gettting over 4 kps. Tabron is doing her best and will be fun to watch for the next couple years. I agree that Ewert and Deluzio carry this team. I'm counting on a few more upsets. As for USC They just look like they don't care, much of their bench was tuned out. They don't cheer for their teammates on the sidelines like many other teams. They lack chemistry and leadership. Where are their other setters? Kudus to Brad Keller for his patience.

No Lazaro at all?
USC must go 5-2 the rest of the way for a winning record with Stanford, UCLA, Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, and Oregon State on tap.
5 wins is going to be really difficult.

IDK, but USC isn’t going anywhere with that setter. Last night is the first time I have watched them live, and Keller is an elite volleyball coach, but the setter is not. But hey, maybe it will all work out. . .

The real test will be the trip to the desert next weekend. They lost both at home, but if they can take 2 in Arizona that would prove out them turning the corner and I could foresee them making a surge back to the tournament. It's hard to tell how much the last two weeks have just been Oregon/USC messiness vs. Buff improvement (though probably six of one, half a dozen of the other).
