5 years ago I would agree, whole new ball game now given the number of kids who transfer. Transfers have really just become an extended part of recruitment. Texas gets great transfers for the same reason they get great recruits, and it’s most definitely sustainable. Sustainable in terms of general success yes, obviously they’re undefeated. However it remains to be seen if program culture maintains strong enough to win out the SEC and the depth of each post season run. Where team environment means a lot and I just wonder if you can over recruit transfers to the point where cohesion is behind the programs who have a nucleus of recruits that have stayed and developed. Undefeated?

What I’m about to say doesn’t it only pertain to you but everyone who has the same argument as you. This is the first season since I’ve been watch Texas (starting in 2015) where JE brought in a large amount of transfers. It was necessary because Texas loss so much to transfer and graduation in the off season. If you look to next year, they will only have room for maybe 1 transfer.

Oh trust I know that and my thing is a lot less about Texas and more about coaches individually. Texas reloading was a special case because of all the transfers out but I wonder how much coaches will rely on the portal over their penciled in recruits to solidify their future rosters. I just don’t see it being the desired route for coaches because of the cohesion aspect. Texas and Penn State have significant success stories but will everyone? My point was more to discourage the idea that everything gets fixed by transferring. I am in the camp of honoring your commitment unless your position has an excess of players with a lot of eligibility remaining. Supplemental help is absolutely necessary, like an experienced setter for UT next season. But if Elliot starts going after more pins then I’m gonna raise my eyebrows.

Honestly seems unsustainable to me. Yea it may help them in the short term if the season but I feel like continuing to load up via portal will eventually lead to weakness of team chemistry year after year ESPECIALLY next. Fleck and SKT are experienced and knew each other from the PAC and most every player in the NCAA would follow Logan Eggelston to the depths of hell. She’s that special and influential. Don’t see the same level of success via goal focus with Akana/Halter, Swindle/Transfer, and Skinner running the show. That team would NEED the development of cohesiveness /chemistry to reach It’s potential 5 years ago I would agree, whole new ball game now given the number of kids who transfer. Transfers have really just become an extended part of recruitment. Texas gets great transfers for the same reason they get great recruits, and it’s most definitely sustainable. I have my doubts that the transfer numbers will continue at this level once the free COVID year run its course. A number of transfers this year were super seniors that wouldn't have eligibility left under normal circumstances. Also most likely a number of underclassmen transfers were prompted by super seniors staying for the extra year. The number of transfers (both in and out) at Texas were influenced by super seniors. Fleck, Caffey, and Ewart are super seniors. Bergmark had two years remaining, but was a grad transfer. Does she transfer if she only had one year remaining? Does SKT transfer last year if she didn't have the super senior year available this year? Williams and Cabello transferred out. How much was that influenced by super seniors (Eggleston and Gabriel/SKT) returning at their positions?

Texas and Penn State have significant success stories but will everyone? pitt and Louisville put themselves in the position to now be considered national powerhouses because of transfers and that was before the transfer frenzy even started. DBK 3 starting setters she's had since 2017 all came in as transfers, as well as Stevenson Pitt brought in member-meneh and Serena gray who massively helped change the trajectory of that team as well. transfers can be great if the coaches know what they're doing. I dont think its ideal for schools to have as many transfers as texas and psu did in one year, but they were really left with no other option and I dont think well see that again, at least at a top 15 school. Minnesota could be an exception this offseason for obvious reasons.

I think that one consequence of the new Transfer Window calendar for undergraduates (11/28/2022 to 1/23/2023; and 5/1 2023 to 5-15-2023) is that it will make it more difficult for newly-hired coaches who are hired in after mid-January 2023 to recruit undergraduates from the Transfer Window. Alot of the top ones will now make their decisions in December or by January 23rd.
All of Penn State's transfers for this year's team decided after that January 23rd deadline (which I don't think will apply to graduate transfers, but I'm not sure). Katie Hurta and Gillian Grimes announced their flips on February 26th and March 17th, respectively. I'm not sure how their status as incoming freshman would have played in under the new rules -- maybe that's yet a third category -- but it seems to me that this new calendar is yet another incentive for teams that make a coaching change to name a new coach as soon as possible -- ideally in December.

I believe the window only applies to when current student athletes can enter their name in the transfer portal. They don't necessarily have to have made a decision. And as long as incoming freshman having sign their NLI, they would still be free to switch schools. They do not enter the portal.

Does the regular recruiting contact period apply for portal players or can schools contact them/recruit them any time?
