For all the criticism the Minn middles, Shaffmaster, and the backrow face on the board, they must be doing something right defensively. Minn can shut teams down. In the last 7 matches: PSU hit 144, Neb 135, Ohio State 112, Illinois 117. When it happens once, maybe the other team just had a bad match. But shut down four ranked teams like this . . . you're showing what you are capable of. Wis and Purdue did better in beating Minn, but neither ran roughshod, as Wisconsin did the first go round.

I'd like to acknowledge my role in MN's win. I'm one of those sports fan who low key thinks that my team does better when I don't watch. I don't know - things just seem to often go south if I am watching intently (I'm sure it's the times where that actually happens that stand out, so it SEEMS like it happens all the time). I picked up the PSU-MN match right at 19-12 or 19-13 in the first set only to see PSU reel off a bunch of points to tie it. Right then I left and met my friend for a drink and only saw score updates. Had I stayed, MN would have probably lost. Lol. Lol. Thanks for your effort assisting in the win. You know you can't watch any of the tournament then, right? Ha. I'll watch non-MN matches and watch when MN is ahead or maybe slightly behind if it's early. If things start tightening too much, I'll go away, like tonight.

So glad Minnesota is done with Penn State (for the foreseeable future) after the beatdown earlier this year. I swear Jonni Parker and Hord gives me nightmares. This reminds me of 2004, when everyone was so happy that we’d never have to play against Stacy Gordon again. Whoops! That worked out ok.

I kept waiting for Hord to go off but MN dids a good job of siding out late to keep her from going off. This was so huge. Service pressure kept her from doing too much damage. I thought MN did a nice job in serve receive tonight too. Yes, this. They showed that graphic that something like 57% of Penn States’s attacks are out of the middle. Tonight it was 38 of 153, so just under 25%. Meanwhile, Rollins, Pritchard, Parker and Starck on the outside had 110 attempts with 28 kills and 19 errors to hit a combined .082.

Who is criticizing the Minnesota defense? CC is excellent on the ground, the middles are all great defenseively, and Samedy is the hardest working opposite defensively in the country. The criticism of Staff and the middles is mostly about offense, no? Not sure how opponent hitting percent factors into that.

"Dream Prediction:
Hugh unlocks secret door" Husemann is unleashed as X-factor in MN victory"
does 3 2 9 count?
otoh Best match of the year for Gophers Service pressure Best passing Relentless defense MB contributing both offensively and defensively Shaff had some setting issues, but distributed well and varied the tempo
Ahh, but that one disastrous PSU run when we got stuck in ro1 for something like 8 serves. We were so one-dimensional on many of those points. Ro1 is MN's Achilles heel. With Miyabe stacked you'd think they could run combinations on the left with Samedy crossing in for a 31 drawing the MB so that Miyabe has a 1 on 1
Has a team ever set a D-type set to the left sideline for Wenaas (left back) to make a back row attack. More realistically... why don't they run Samedy inside for a gap set.
It is hardly surprising that our left pins were blocked repeatedly. Our middles really get no respect. There were points where Rollins on the left pin was dead center and the MB and OPP were just camped across from Miyabe.
Shaff did a better job giving Wenaas angles down the line on a number of sets. Very encouraging.

Nice win!
Two apparent things:
- need to keep running the slide, that's the only set the middles are going to get consistently - Husemann needs to be the starter for the rest of the year

Thoughts on when Glenn came in? Didn't recognize her at first!

Minnesota is getting better at closing out sets. Despite losing to Wisconsin and Purdue I think Minnesota is actually peaking at the right time.

Thoughts on when Glenn came in? Didn't recognize her at first! I liked the move. Miyabe needed to reset and it gave a different look to have a lefty OH in. I thought she did well. Its good to have another option if one is struggling.

Minnesota is getting better at closing out sets. Despite losing to Wisconsin and Purdue I think Minnesota is actually peaking at the right time. Except in rotation 1. We bled 8 straight points from that rotation in set one. Glad they were able to close it out though, that could have been a huge momentum shift.
