Francis needed a good night. Easier to have a good night when the defense was not that great, as well.

CAL has not won a set since Oct 22. This post is going to hold up for quite a few more months.

Hard to say that Cal's defense was good with Stanford hitting .832 or whatever it was, but they were awfully hard to get a ball down against at times.

There were definitely some long rallies with great defense on both sides. At the same time, yeah, Stanford hit .418. Although Cal only let Stanford hit 10 points higher than USC let them hit a couple days ago (but I don't think many people are saying USC's a fantastic defensive team either...).
Conversely, it's still a little alarming that Cal hit .189 -- Stanford's defense has improved over the season, but every other opponent that Stanford is fortunate enough to play will be a much better squad, and they need to tighten things up further. Or maybe Stanford is going for the Hank Gathers/Bo Kimble/Loyola Marymount all-offense/no-defense strategy, and figuring that if their tournament opponent hits .350, they can hit .375 and still win. And maybe that's their best option.
With Maeder, Grote & Bergmark, Cal has a bit of a starting point for next season. But (as noted above) none of them will help Cal pass any better next year. Hopefully the Bears (and Stanford...) can get everyone healthy, have a good spring practice for the first time in 3 years, and get themselves back into the mix next year.
