Smith Fieldhouse is much cozier than the huge arenas where teams like Utah play...the crowd is right there close enough to touch the servers. Also, the BYU fans are completely devoted to their teams, (at home and on the road). And honestly, what else do you do in Provo on a Saturday night? Definitely my favorite volleyball rivalry. A classic example of what Freud called the narcissism of small differences: "the deepest hatreds are manifested between people who—to most outward appearances—exhibit very few significant distinctions." Wow. Freud has entered the chat.

There are many reasons why it is so intense, but one of the main, and fun, reasons is that so many families have members that are split between the two schools. So even siblings root for different teams.

Drews was the best player on the court. Imagine if Utah still had Kenzie? Whew. That what I have been saying. Imagine if Utah gave a fraction of the attention from Drews to Koerber, Utah could very easily be one of the best teams in the country.

They would have all the pieces.

Even in Utah's best seasons, they maxed out at the Sweet 16.

There's definitely some truth to this. One of my favorite stories about this is when Utah had future No. 1 NBA draft pick Andrew Bogut, and New Mexico was putting a beating on the No. 13 Utes in The Pit in 2005. Some New Mexico fans (led by my best friend, according to him, but I wasn't there) started a "Past your bedtime!" chant directed at the Utes. I loved this because A) it's funny, and B) I just know that it drove the Utah fans insane because it would be more applicable to BYU. But to Lobos fans, there's basically no difference between BYU and Utah, so bedtime smack is perfectly applicable to both. Edit: The late great Christopher Hitchens wrote a very interesting article about the narcissism of small differences about a decade ago.

You think Koerber transferred because she wasn’t getting enough attention?

Dani Drews is one of those once-in-a-lifetime players that has the talent and backs it up with hard work and a great attitude. She's like poetry in motion to watch. I especially love watching her pass on serve receive and dig balls. She is so much better at both than when I watched her as a freshman. I don't need to say it, but of course her hitting is phenomenal. I admire her as a player and person and am hoping she does great things at the next level as well. I respect Madi Robinson for the work she has done to develop into the player she currently is. Good for her. Stef Jankiewicz was very good yesterday, so much better than the first match. That last point hurts, but it can happen to anyone, and she deserves praise for setting a very good match yesterday.
The best part of BYU's win is that Kenzie Koerber hit .000% and they still pulled it off. She hung in there on the passing and had some good defensive pickups and blocks at moments that really helped. Plus she served well too. Serving was key for BYU in this match because the execution in other aspects was very up and down, but missing four in a row at the end of set four, that nearly cost them the set. Whew! Thank goodness Tayler Hifo was back. The digs she made in the middle of set three completely opened up that set for BYU, even though they nearly gave it all back towards the end.

Is Drews the best player in the history of University of Utah volleyball?

Is Drews the best player in the history of University of Utah volleyball? I don't know enough about the history of Utah volleyball to say. She's the best I've seen, but I haven't seen much.

Fair enough. Just curious. I know they've had at least a couple of other first-team All-Americans. But I don't know their history very well either.

I actually knew of some older ones at one point because of my sister, but I can't remember anything about them at the moment. Of course the most recent player that comes to mind is Adora Anae, who was a senior when Dani was a freshman, but as good as Anae was for the Utes, Drews is far and away the better player.

Adora Anae is the only other 1st Teamer for Utah. I agree that Drews is the better player. They had some really good players in the mid-00s (Toone, Webb, Turner, the two girls who transferred) but IMO Drews is clearly the Ute GOAT
