I figured I would start this conversation to carry us over until Thursday!
With the first USAV (18s) Qualifiers a little over a month away, what can we expect for the competitive divisions this season? With the number of 2022’s heading to University at semester & forgoing club, I imagine the strength will be shifted (as is usually the case since heading to NCAA in January is nothing new). One interesting element (for me at least) is the complete absence of TAV in any 18s division this season. This past season’s 17 Black team earned bronze at Nationals so it will be intriguing to see the talent spread to other programs in DFW area. Houston Skyline 17 Royal were the front-runners for most of last season, and seeing a team photo from H Skyline’s 18 Royal team the other day had some notable absentees including Alexis Dacosta (Baylor). I’m not super familiar with personnel on the top teams outside of TX, but I’m excited to see what Florida, Cali, and the Midwest bring to the Qualifiers.

At first glance, it looks like Windy City has the least strong field

Is TAV not doing 18's anymore? I can't find them listed at any tourneys and they have 10-17's only listed on their page. Too many early graduates or defections? No Ping anymore so why bother?

In SoCal it will likely include Sunshine LA, Wave, Coast, Mizuno Long Beach, SG Elite, and T-Street in the hunt. I would guess that Absolute Black from NorCal will also show up.

Essentially the last third of Ping's final season at TAV was full of drama and tension. He informed TAV directors that he would not be returning to the program the following year and so TAV directors basically wanted to terminate him on the spot. Parents of his team were enraged (of course) and the rest of the season was not the same. Ironically, it didn't seem to affect his ability to finish well at Nationals (3rd in 17 Open), but the parents had had enough. A good chunk of them moved over to Skyline, and the other 4 or 5 are scattered between Madfrog, Drive Nation, etc. I guess TAV directors would rather not have a less competitive 18 Black team (which would likely consist of 17 Blue & whatever other athletes they could get). So the result is they simply don't have an 18s team at any division. I think the loss of their 12 Court facility might've had something to do with it since Skyline bought it from them. TAV currently has to rent courts at a few other smaller gyms around DFW.

Are there any notable early-grads that we won't see in the field? I don't see any early-grads missing from Rosters. Looks like Sunshine 18 LA is returning everyone but a MB who moved to Miz LB. That includes 4 Marymount HS starters, 2 Stanford & 2 USC commits. Wave 18-Kevin is also returning most of their team from last year including 2 Cal Poly & 1 Stanford commit (lost a MB AZ State commit to Coast). Miz Long Beach returns everyone including Mele Corral-Blagojevich & Adonia Faumuina (USC), and adds some talent from Sunshine, Coast, and SG Elite. SoCal 18s get started this weekend with the PVL entry tournament ( AES). Top 5 seeds: Sunshine 18 LA, Wave 18-Kevin, Miz LB 18 Rockstar, Coast 18-1, & SG Elite 18 Roshambo.

Are there any notable early-grads that we won't see in the field? Enough programs are struggling to find scholarships for their COVID seniors; I doubt they'd be picking up early enrollees.

That’s what I would’ve assumed as well, but we had a few do it from TX so I wondered about other regions. I also know of a few that we’re planning on going early, and then were told that there was not $$ for them to do so, like you are saying. Maybe just a case-by-case basis then.

Yes, that is what I understand. If you attend early, it is on your own dime for that semester, then the Schollie kicks in. That has been the experience with the limited number of families I know.
